I have a pair of new "headlamp boxes" to weld on to my RR but rather than the normal black primer, they have arrived zinc coated.
Do I need to do anything more than key, etch prime, prime and paint?

You must remove some zinc prior to welding and even then, make sure that you wear a suitable mask to avoid breathing in the vapour that you can't avoid releasing with the heat. If you're attaching these pieces with a seam, allow a good half Inch of bare steel behind the weld, if you're spot or plug welding, then allow a similar distance as a radius around each spot.
Apply some weld through primer to the bare edges and overlap the remaining zinc, otherwise, the coating will corrode away quickly and leave the steel unprotected. For this reason, it's also advisable to use Galvafroid - ideally when the steel is still hot from welding - on areas where some surface is bare and some still Galvanised.

I have a major thread update due.
Every time I think i'm getting close to done, I take another panel off (in this case a front wing) and find either something new that needs fixing or in this case, something I knew was a bit frilly is now absent. ie the lower mountings for the leading edge of the front wing and front lamp cluster aren't actually attached to anything on the passenger side and i'm assuming the drivers side is as bad.

For anyone that stumbles in to any of my rambling about range rover parts in the future, these guys make repair panels at very reasonable prices BUT their a/b post lower repairs are "over panels" and need cutting down to be a proper repair rather than a bodge:

I share the pain of welding a Discovery 1, which is to be honest a Rangie Classic with it's scruffs on.

Yep, lots of bits match perfectly between disco 1 and RR. Even the disco2 shares quite a few.
My light boxes (front body mounts) should be here today although I am already booked to be out and about both days this weekend so they will have to wait a week before I get to fit them.
Hopefully with lighter evenings from Monday onwards, i'll be able to get more done
