A toy for those with an android phone and a modern car

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

A toy for those with an android phone and a modern car

For those of us who work on modern cars as well as old cars, these are a bit of a bargain at the moment on the 'bay......http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-Mini-EL ... 20e2eabf03

I've bought one, and downloaded Torque pro from the android app store, £2.92....https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... e&hl=en_GB

And now i have not only the ability to read and clear fault codes on the wifes modern, but also live streaming sensor data to my phone as we drive along....pretty awesome for less than a tenner all in!

Doesn't work for Imugs/ifashion victims ...sorry, Users of iphones....

We had a thread talking about these a while ago.
If your modern is a ford, try downloading forscan. It's a free windows program that gives you much more information on running than torque does and you can use it as a data logger.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

Yes, I've been running Torque Pro on my Legend, then on the current Android device since ages ago. It was a real send for the Smart as S.T.A.R. (Mercedes' own diagnostic software) was almost impossible to hack and that meant that I'd have had to take it to the dealer for code resetting, engine tweaks and similar had it not been for Torque which, by the way, was written by Ian Hawkins as he also ran a 0.8CDi with the OM660 engine and had become frustrated with the lack of software outside of S.T.A.R.

Weird thing was how he hadn't actually included all of the Smart CDi information, missing such things as the cars' weights, without which the MPG gauge wouldn't work either but in practice, entering the weight manually was no issue. With both the 07 Jetta and the 13 Golf, every parameter imaginable was already in the app's directory and I've used that dongle to do countless other cars too.
We now rent out these BT dongles for the students at work, none of whom would be seen with an Apple product in their boiler suit pocket because [an iphone] is as much use as a chocolate teapot in a workshop environment.
For those who want Torque to work seamlessly across all of their gadgets, there's now an Ubuntu version too, useful for those of us who work with the various LAs' education departments.

FORscan wouldn't talk to the Mondeo, where Torque would, but it works fine on the S-Max. One day I may even get round to modding the ELM, but for what I use it, seems a lot of hassle for little gain.

It can be handy having a modified adapter if you want to change settings eg the number of indicator flashes when you do a quick press or the alarm re-lock timeout but most of the time it's just a useful tool for monitoring the car if you are fault finding.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.
