Insurance vs postcode

Some of you are aware that we relocated late last year out of London to the Berkshire / Hampshire boarders - I renewed the insurance on the classics a few months ago £230 through Haggerty for the Jowett Javelin, Jag XJ6 4.2 & my P6 3.5 V8 Rover which I considered very reasonable . The insurance on the wifes Corsa 1.4 SXI is due in a couple of weeks and a reminder arrived yesterday to say that it will be automatically renewed at a cost of £545.00 - I then realised that the reminder had come via the royal mails redirection service so the insurance company still had our very respectful W9 Maida Vale, London address - and not our new address / RG26 postcode - obviously one that had slipped through the net - and to be honest we knew that they would be a few that did which is why we redirected the mail for a full year - so I have yet give 'Old Churchie' a call and request them to requote with the new address but just thought I would try a few of the online competitors and wow what a difference getting out of London is !!! - £400 difference in fact - I have two quotes from main players in the market for fully comp including business use for just £150 - Happy days :D

Well here is something to think on!

I've been in the chat rooms on an american forum, and it's looking like they have been told
to prepare for the same polar vortexes that changed the jet stream last year might happen
again the this coming winter! The info was given by some who work for the equivalent of the
highways agency.

So if you live in an area that didn't flood last time that is another reason the insurance was
cheaper!

Something tells me the amphibious car might be an idea topic for the mag at this rate :?

Some years ago our post codes were changed - not the address, just the XX5 nXX went to XX7 nXX and our car insurances went up!

My address has a Teesside postcode and Hartlepool in the address. BUT!! I don't live in
Hartlepool or in Teesside I live in County Durham have always had the house under the
Durham County Council voting, council tax area and even have a Wearside 0191 area code.
But having Hartlepool, with Teesside postcode drives the insurance costs up!

A Teesside postcode in itself shouldn't make a lot of difference as the code shows the area (eg Hartlepool, Ormsby etc) right down to a few houses in a street in some cases. Hence my postcode (the first two letters cover much of Cumbria) reflected a "different" area when it changed from XX5 to XX7 (XX5 became a "posh" area!).

Similarly, the second part of the code breaks the area down further - a friend two miles away (only the last two letters different in the post code) gets much higher insurance quotes as she is in an "at risk of flooding" area because her area is designated as a flood plain - she's at least thirty feet up a hill from it. We are lower down and nearer the water than she is but have never been flooded (though the water has been close to the front doors of the houses by the main road. She did argue with them before Carlisle was flooded, saying that, if her house was flooded, Carlisle would be in dire straits. That was a bit ironic - she was proven right a year or two later!
