This just popped on the news less than a minute ago with the Minister for Business pushing it!
BBC News website wrote:The UK government has announced that driverless cars will be allowed on public roads from January next year.

It also invited cities to compete to host one of three trials of the tech, which would start at the same time.

In addition, ministers ordered a review of the UK's road regulations to provide appropriate guidelines.

The Department for Transport had originally pledged to let self-driving cars be trialled on public roads by the end of 2013.

Business Secretary Vince Cable revealed the details of the new plan at a research facility belonging to Mira, an automotive engineering firm based in the Midlands.

"Today's announcement will see driverless cars take to our streets in less than six months, putting us at the forefront of this transformational technology and opening up new opportunities for our economy and society," he said.

If sat nav can't even tell you the correct directions or take you to the correct address, what chance have you to stop the thing if it heads down the wrong side of the road or the wrong way on a one way street?

At least with a separate sat nav you can disconnect it and throw it out the window if necessary(done that!) after it tried to drown me in the Humber, river Wear, and yes the Tyne, allso the Ouse.

It took me 3+ years of constant pestering to get google maps to change their detais as they had my home as a main road and we did have vehicles trying to drive through even though it was blatantly obvious that it was private property. One of the neighbor's still has his garden marked with a public foot path and through their kitchen!

OK, so driverless cars, why? :? If my car goes somewhere I'd just as soon be there or goodness knows what the thing would get up to. Why on earth would you want a car without a driver? Could you ask it to go to the shops, do your week's messages for you, bring them home, unload itself then pack your freezer while you do something more interesting? And what about the roads where there's no satnav coverage available regardless of whose maps you use? I mean obviously the GPS device still knows where you are in terms of latitude and longitude but it would only know where the road was if it were on the map that goes with the system that the car uses.

I'd just as soon spend the cash on a Wolseley 16/60 auto with a nodding dog on the back shelf. That would be much more likely to last beyond this time next year.

And if you do send an autonomous car to the shops for those messages, could you trust it to rifle through every single loaf to find the one with the BBE date that's the furthest into the future? Would it recognise BOGOF and 342 offers and if they were out of the owner's preferred wine, would the car be able to make an informed decision about which year and which grape to bring as an alternative?

It will end in tears.

I have a better idea for reducing traffic-related troubles: Carless drivers.

Given that going wrong is what computers do best, God help us but given that the House of Commons has so many utter prawns in it, should we be surprised :?: Although not an MP, I see Boris is descriminating against older cars; I wonder how much this cost the SMMT :?: Maybe driverless cars will be given a discount :?:

I wonder whether in many cases, a stupid computer driving, will be any worse than a dickhead driving but I wonder what happens if there is an accident or if a car gets a speeding ticket :?: If it's down to a system malfunction, could get tricky. Plenty of work for solicitors and barristers.....aren't lots of MPs from their ranks.....or am I being cynical :?:

I don't see driverless cars ever being preserved. I have said for a long time, that there will be an ever widening automotive generation gap, between what we roughly have now as classic cars and the rest.

If most of the computers I have seen were driving, I reckon it would be like this sequence  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYt4_saZ6TA , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ-ca6CcYT8 & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYmxvvpm-es.
