Anyone ever made an exhaust manifold?

I'm currently sourcing exhaust manifolds for my MGB V8 conversion. They have to be the 'block hugger'type and the problem is that companies want in excess £400 (plus the VAT) for a pair which is a lot of money to me. Ok they are stainless steel but i'm going to get my ceramic coated or wrapped anyway.

I found this kit online, and given that my dad is a competent welder is the something worth trying?

I was thinking then I could get them jet coated.

For what it's worth I made a manifold for a TVR V8 conversion many years ago from m/s pipe, not formed on a mandrel. It took me ages and looked shite, too many welds. You would have to use oxy acetylene to get a decent weld, unless you have access to a nice plasma welder. I know s/steel sounds expensive but would be the best job IMHO. The kit is £200, quite a lot for mild steel I would say. Hope it goes well mate.
