I turned on the BBC new channel to see what is happening with the weather, and the head line
was that there is a roller coaster of bad weather out there coming from the states for the next
six weeks plus
I usually watch the late night bulletins from the states ABC on BBC news channel at 1:30am and
CBS on Sky News Channel at 2:30am. Yes I am a bight owl or hawk if I watch too much "allo allo!"
We all know that with the Gulf stream and the Jet stream what ever the weather the USA gets we
on this side of the pond will get a degree of it! So I watch those bulletins for that and see what is
scaring them this time!
Well they have been getting it for some time in waves coming down from the artic circle, they were
saying that they are looking another three waves of the cold blasts coming down from the artic at
least!!!.

And the Beeb are saying 6+more weeks of this for us!!!
I hope we are not going to have another washout of a year!!
(I haven't got floatation devices or something along those lines fixed to the neon but giving the last
few years, I might start thinking about it if the UK is still getting this type of weather by July!!!! )

If we get the US's weather a week or so later, why aren't we covered in snow and suffering extremely cold temperatures at the moment? OK, the weather is not the usual winter weather - but what is that - and why was the summer before last so wet, yet last summer was almost bone dry?
TBH, I rarely find that our weather follows the US patterns - we've had two nights below zero this winter and I think I saw two snow flakes the other week - but no more than that!
However, we often find some of the coldest weather in February or March, so I don't think anyone will expect to mow lawns or sow seeds outside for a while!
One thing is for sure - even if I don't wake up tomorrow, the weather will still do whatever it wants to do.

From what I understand as the cold weather pushes down from the north pole it pushes
against the jest stream as well as bringing down cold weather into the states.
This apparently is holding the jet stream in such a way that the cold weather system gets
warmed up from the Mexican gulf and as well as warmer air coming up from Africa so we
get it as rain more than snow.
Why do you think that it is usually the west coast that gets most of the rain or snow.
Where the weather hits the UK is down to the jet stream and where it is hovering over the
UK and Europe. So in this case the south and east are getting rather than us up north!

A case of yes and no I think. Yes, our weather is affected, but it will not the same as the US's weather - otherwise we'd have had snow and cold weather like they have had and not the rain and flooding that we have had.
Yes, we have a prevailing westerly wind - that's why those on the west tend to live in raincoats etc and the North East live in tee-shirts (it tends to be drier on the other side of the Pennines (because, as the air rises over the hills, it cools and rain comes down). But I'm sure you have noticed that it tends to snow more on the east side of the country - when the winds come from the continent, they hit the east side first and most of it has gone by the time it gets over the Pennines and, nearer the Irish Sea, we tend to get very little snow - though there was some on the higher hills in the Lake District a day or two ago (I can see them from the house). That certainly doesn't come from the US!
I would suspect that the threatened "Global Warming" is also partly to blame: the experts have always said that the temperature will rise, but we would get more rain. I seem to remember the disbelievers and comedians saying that they were happy that it was going to be warm, so weren't bothered about a "little more rain"!
