I picked up a replacement top tailgate for my RR last night but the glass is covered in stickers. What it the safest way to remove them without scratching the glass? Picking at them with my fingernails is only flaking off very small bits and I don't want to risk a scraper as the last time I did that, I scratched a window (which 5 years later, still bothers me).

Hair dryer to warm them up might soften the glue. There is a product called 'Sticky Stuff Remover' that might work

Use some thinners to soften them and then use a plastic scraper, you'll have them off in no time

Depending on how long they've been on, you might get some ghost images of the stickers left on the glass which I have never been successful in removing.

Nail varnish remover on tissue left on the sticker for about 30 min, then use your finger
nail or a loly pop stick to scrap the sticker off. Repeat as messasary.

Sounds like I need to wait for SWMBO to go out and pinch her hair dryer and nail varnish remover.
Cheers guys, I will let you know how I get on. Some people seem to think that "comedy stickers" (to steal a phrase from JC) are entertaining. I think they are damn irritating!

Use cellulose thinners - much cheaper than nail varnish and more or less the same thing but without the bits that keep your skin smooth.

I also find careful use of a razor blade (the open type, not disposable) works well too.

This should depend on whether the HRW is embedded or printed , if the former then scraping away to your heart's content will be grand, if the latter then don't use anything other than an alcohol-based liquid (IPA is fine) as cellulose thinners takes the print off and scraping almost always does too where anything sticky is on the element.
I'm thinking that this is old enough to be an embedded one (late '70s - mid '90s mostly) but it's always as well to check. Many from after the mid to late 1990s are printed by the same process that prints resistors, etc. onto Paxolin. Cheaper to make.

What do the stickers say? Are there no good ones at all on there?

Fortunately the only sticker on the inside is "LEX Land Rover" which can stay (mainly as it is the same supplying dealer as mine came from originally). It is 1994 vintage, I think the heated element wires are embedded but I can't claim to have checked.
The stickers on the outside say "100% BMW FREE", "One Life Live It", a P&O GB Sticker and some off-road slogans which I can't remember off hand. Some daft comments about being dirty.
I will take the cheapest solution first which is to use things SWMBO has paid for

Stickers on the outside on glass? How queer. At least this eliminates any concern about the HRW though.

Agreed - still evidence of some old stickers on son's Mini that had already been removed when we bought it about five years ago but even now you can still see where they were - must have been damn powerful glue to leave that sort of mark - it's almost etched into the glass

White Spirit might be another possibility to use to get the residue off . . . . .
