I'm sure there's a good number on here know already how cylinder heads are produced. I've learnt that evaporating foam is used. What was used before evaporating foam was invented?

Green sand (sand and clay) and the cored parts will be sand with a stronger binder ..(sodium silicate.. starch.. clay etc) Alloy heads are more likely cast in plaster than foam .
Pop over to Alloy Avenue website, you don't need to register to look 8-)

Here's a good example of what can be done with foam !

So foam is the new version of lost wax casting.
We still have all our parts cast the old fashioned way with wood patterns and sand casting.
