Not even a death will persuade BBC TV news to mention Le Mans (Not that a death would be reason to cover the event; I'm just illustrating how, for some reason, they ignore it)  . Before the Internet, only Simon Taylor's radio bulletins kept you up to date if you weren't there. If I were able to be endowed with the necessary ability, for just one event, Le Mans would be it…..though I might want it to be set in a time warp but I don’t know when…..Vintage Bentley, Jaguar D Type, GT40, Jaguar XJR 9. Somehow a diesel racing car just doesn't seem right :? .

I was surprised that the accident was at Tetre Rouge. I have seen the footage and it looks like a simple case of over correction (I’ve lost it like that), which I reckon is one of the worst kinds of losing it. Ironically it seems that the run off area made things worse; if the guard rail had been next to the track, I think he would have glanced off it, rather than gone in at the angle he did. The car seemed relatively in tact and it seems incredible that the driver should have died in it. In 1986, when Jo Gartner died, his gearbox seized on the Mulsanne straight (There were no chicanes then), at around 200mph, so you might expect that to be serious (Oddly enough I hadn't long turned in when that happened, as I was falling asleep in my seat), yet in 1987, Win Percy got away with a tyre blow out down there (His car didn't :!: ). 27 years, without a death at Le Mans, is a record that I hope to see broken.
