Black brake fluid?!?!

I have just changed the brake fluid on the MIL's Polo and the stuff that came out was black. Is that just water discolouring it or does it sound like a pipe / seal is degrading in to the fluid?

Terry

That sounds very much like a rubber seal has been disintegrating and discolouring the fluid. Best to check all seals, maybe starting with the brake master cylinder first, to see what's what.

Seconded, almost certainly a seal well on its way IMO.

Cheers! :D

Nuts.
I'm never sure why some people don't maintain their cars until they literally stop working. As the black fluid came from all 4 wheels I'll have a look for a master cylinder.
Cheers guys.

Well, The mother-in-law is now feeling poorer but she has a new master cylinder and new flexi-hoses fitted and her brakes are vastly improved (peddle is high and firm plus the car brakes in a straight line which is an improvement on last week!). I will check the fluid again in 1000 miles or so and if it is still clear I'll leave it at that. if it is black then I'll find a seal kit for whichever corner the black fluid comes from.
Cheers all.
