You can still get bog standard phones that can be used to make telephone calls and send SMS texts.
Samsung do one that only costs £20 as an outright buy on PAYT. So almost sure to be nil cash on a monthly billing arrangement.
Or if you like your old Nokia and want to replace it with similar, I have a very tidy one (a 3510 I think, I'd have to check but it does have a colour screen so is probably one of those) with no faults that you'd be welcome to have for the cost of postage as it's not being used and all I do is charge it and run it down on a monthly basis to keep the battery calibrated.
Supplied on Cellnet, it's open to all networks and is dual band so can take any European SIM.
It's in perfect condition and comes with the charger and a leather case that's kept it in that condition since new.

Last time I used it regularly was a couple of years ago as the reception phone for the Dolomite Club until the Chairman organised a club-supplied one for that job.
I can promise that the battery has been treated correctly so still gives a good week worth of standby and hours on end of calls.
If you should go down the smartphone route, ten people would give you ten answers and they'd all be right because most are good devices and the only things separating the top brands are personal preference.

My wife has a new Nokia 110 - very much in the style of the old Nokia 3510 etc. One of those phones that has been designed well - meaning that you don't need an instruction book the size of a directory just to make a call! Nice and cheap, too.

My current phone is a Nokia N8. I wanted a Nokia smartphone that did all the smartphone stuff and do it well and the N8 ticked all the boxes for me. I think it is one of the few real alternatives to the iPhone4/4S.
