Is this 3/8"?

I'm counting 8 threads per half inch.

I would say 3/8 UNC. UNC is 16 TPI, BSF 20 and UNF 24

I've no idea regarding the answer, but may I just say that's a very good photo! Couldn't be clearer.
What is it for?
Cheers!

I can't resist any more.
It doesn't matter what thread it is, it's screwed.
I'll get my coat.

I'm guessing that it's for an oil gallery as it's tapered in a very similar way to the one on the right of this pair. (Excuse the shadow, phone camera LED flash couldn't quite get in about at the edge of the left one):

What is it for, most kind of oil fitting or gauges and the like will be BSP. or BSPT

It is tapered isn't it? Looks like an oil pressure sender to me, the pot type that goes with a remote instrument head. Same thread as the one I posted if you count the threads, and that's to fit a capillary to a Saab/Triumph IL4 or V8 oil pump.
