I used to think my angle grinder was No 1 in the garage - best tool ever invented; but recently I've shifted in favour of my impact wrench.
I worked on a Spitfire pulley nut for three days, then borrowed an impact wrench which removed it in ten seconds - so I bought my own. This morning I replaced the brake discs on a Landrover in an hour; caliper bolts were rusted solid and came out in seconds. Definitely a good buy!
Any favourites in your garage?

Bought a nice longer-handled mash hammer (lump hammer) last year - just the job for the tractors!

I reckon the favourite is a set of decent AF ratchet/combination spanners that I bought at a show about five or six years ago. They are American-made, with a nice "flight case" and have a really smooth action. They look so nice, I try not to use them!

For a cheap buy - the code reader that I bought on eBay for about £10.50 inc p&p. I put a daft bid on, having spotted it about five minutes from the end with no bids and won it for a fiver. Although not in a box, it has hardly been used. It's one recommended on the VW-Audi OC website and should have cost over £50! It paid for itself within a day of arriving!

I have a wheel bearing remover/installer kit, bought off the 'bay, one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WHEEL-DRIVE-BEARI ... 415661d046 much cheaper than the normal suppliers do them for and justifiable at that price.... Mr's Rusty's modern needed a front bearing for the mot, and when I bought the new one there was no way I'd be able to do it with the old home method.....80mm dia by 45mm deep....

Bearings are getting bigger, and the old freezer/cooker/hammer method doesn't cut it with big modern fwd one piece bearings. It took all of 10 mins to crank the old bearing out and the new one in, it took me longer to dig out a 32mm socket to drive the thing than to actually use it-an absolute gem of a tool at that price!

But on a more serious note, my most useful tool of all time... the 'Scotty in engineering saves the Enterprise device' has to be, the humble stud extractors, I've saved many a block (and brake caliper)from the scrap yard with a good set of those over the years I can tell you.

And people still look at me in wonderment and whisper "how the hell did you manage that?".... Oh there goes my secret.

hi, not stritcly a tool, but my kettle! it calms your nerves when you start to go from small spanner, to big hammer, and stop, take a break and dont lose my cool!

a cup of tea can be very useful in the garage.
