Mini suspension cones, rear subframe

Hi,
Just had the rear wheel off my 78 mini 1000 project to swap nasty wide alloys over to nice proper dunlop d1's, noticed a problem while gazing at the suspension set up....... Its sitting a tad low at this corner which up to now I've put down to a bad suspension knuckle but....

At the back of the subframe where the rubber suspension cone meets the subframe, it is half encased in a steel cup, that looks to be located in the suspension cone mount (hope that makes sense, this is the very back of the set up, not the trumpet end)

Said "cup" is rusty thin, splitting away from cone and not enscapsulating (big word :ugeek: ) snugly as it should. Anyway, my knolwedge of mini suspension and subframes (other than rear subframes rot) is a tad limited. So, is the steel cup a part of the subframe that I will need to replicate and weld in, or is it a part of the suspension cone that can be replaced.

Just like to know what I'm looking at before I drop the suspension to fix it, thought I was nearly done but this little mini is like the forth bridge.

The rubber 'spring' has a steel band around it, if this is damaged the whole unit needs replacing.
Haven't you been following my Mini Resto in the mag? Rebuilt the rear subframe in Part 7, I think it was a couple of months ago.

John Simpson.

Hi John,

Thanks, sounds good then, I'm going to replace the knuckle joint anyway so it should be easy enough to do the cone at the same time.

Must confess I may have been half asleep when reading that issue you mention, its about eleven before I sit and read and dependent on the nights choice of beverage I may have read it without taking it in

Ill look through the back issues and give it the attention it deserves.

Thanks,
Mick

John Simpson.
Would that be the part 7 as features in this months mag that I finally got to read last night?

It might not have been the drink after all

Either that or our newsagent is well out of date
