Hi all

The dreaded rustworm is starting to return - at the moment is's just surface rust under the paint on top of stuff that is extremley solid. Is it a silly idea to attempt a piece by piece bare metal respray while the car is still being used? sort of panel at a time stuff. I'd obviously flash over any bare metal if it needed to be driven.

What's the best way to get rid of paint and filler from 30-odd years to present? I'd like to do a good a job as possible, hence back to metal and etch primer etc, but also without taking the car off the road for months. Is this even possible

Any ideas?

I remember a guy attending the MGOC event at Duxford some years back having done the very thing.

He arrived with the bonnet and 2 doors (I think) still in primer.

Drove it into his tent on friday night, and on sunday morning it was on display in full colour!.

He had been doing various jobs on it over the previous 2 years and as he came to it, resprayed each panel.

Had a pretty good finish too.

Not perfect, but darn close.

I guess it's all down to prep time, and making sure the area you paint in is suitable and "Breeze Free"

Paint stripper, and polythene,

coat as much on the panel, make it air tight with the polythene, wait about an hour, and just scrape off, I did a whole Mk3 cortina, with 10 tins of wilcos home brand, an 50 black bags from the 99p store.

the trick is not letting the stripper dry out.

Don't want to go to the bother of a nice paint job if it's just going on top of old tired paint...

Hi,it's perfectly possible to do a decent paint job panel by panel and keep a car on the road in the meantime.

yup bog standar paint stripper....

That rover looks cracking, If you are respraying the car bit by bit you might want to try using rustbusters bodyshop primer which isn't porus unlike most primers so you can still use the car before you put on top coat. I've used their epoxy mastic paint and that is excellent stuff
