hi all advice needed, i have a series2 daimler sovereign 1978 4.2 with air con, it is fitted with a motorola 9ar 70 amp alternator that is faulty (overcharging and boiling the battery),i had a guestimate of around £80 to refurb it but have seen on the internet refurbed lucas alternators for between £55 and £65 same handing and same output as mine will they work on my car? my wiring is two large brown crimped cables going to a double spade and a small black and brown going to a single spade connector cheers.

All alternators work in the same way, if you can fit the correct pulley and make it line up correctly with the belt then it will be fine.
I have a 100amp alternator in my mog (i used to have a BIG stereo installed) in place of the standard dynamo, uprated 120amp alternator in the range in place of the 100amp one.

Going through their web site it looks like they have an alternator for your car £66 exchange.

just had a look on that site terry £62.00 but with vat and delivery it works out nearly £90 and im a bit skint just had to buy new battery and various bits to get through mot as well as the wifes stripped down mini in need of some new metal every penny counts

Some are machine sensing some, mainly older ones, are battery sensing, the wiring is different.
Then there are ones without regulators inside, etc.

Bought an overhaul kit for a lucas acr for £15 on the bay - AC delco are similar price - came complete with VR, bearings, diode pack, brushes and instructions. Quite an easy job if you have a soldering iron and small bearing puller.
Lot cheaper than £66 and satisfying too

Ah, right, I was just about to suggest fixing the old one too, sounds lik a regulator fault to me. Tricky if you can't get the bits though....

Mind you, the parts must be out there, the re-conditioning company must get parts from somewhere?

A quick google reveals several US parts suppliers. a regulator is $36 + tax and shipping so after all that it probably won't be far shy of replacing it with a UK part. £90 doesn't sound like a bad deal for a new alternator. It's less than the cost of filling it with petrol.

yes terry but i have found cheaper on ebay one new dont know make£58 including potage and a recon £63 that i can pick up just want confirmation they will fit have emailed both but had no replies

With alternators Wood Auto are your friend, you don't need to buy from them 'cause they're expensive but they have a cross-reference application guide which lists virtually every alternator and it's application in the world ever since the dawn of time so you should be able to work out what will fit and what wont, http://www.woodauto.com/default.aspx..........in reality though all you need to worry about is getting something with the right 'handedness' i.e. left or right side of engine fitment, change the pulley for your one, and adapt the cars wiring to suit- in that way you can get something modern, reliable, and high output from a scrapper for very little money if you're not bothered about originality. Lucas A127's look period but are much better than ACR or LRA100's, which are basically ACR's anyway. If your alternator already feed through a Lucas style 3 pinm plug you'll be quids in.
