And some thought I was nuts thinking about putting a Mitsubishi v6 into a neon!
This is a link to a neon on craigslist and it supposedly has a Mitsubishi
3000 gt turbo engine swapped into it!!!!

:o Now that one's a pretty neat job by the looks of it, however they must have hacked the bulkhead about to get it all to work and being a cack-handed example rather than having its controls in the correct place as yours has, the steering column and brake master cylinder aren't causing any clearance issues at the right side of the engine bay. Or are they all on the left with the RHD cars using a tube to link the pedal box to the servo like a later Volvo 140 series or a VW Polo?
That, plus the fact that the Mitsubishi engine's quite compact for its capacity, would mean that your swap is probably the less straightforward in some respects. Look above the gearbox in that engine bay shot, there's room to spare even after the brake servo & m/c and that randomly placed turbo are accounted for, the Mitsubishi motor looks like it belongs there.

I'm guessing that the need for a new rack is something to do with the slightly greater depth of the OHC Japanese engine though, at least your one keeps the steering standard.

Edited: I've just noticed the laughing gas on the Mitsi-engined mentalist Neon! Please tell me they gave it some decently large brakes and some suspension upgrades to suit....

If it was an aixam or the like I think it would have been me that probably put
it there  nudge nudge wink wink.

All those aixams are just a quad bike with a veritable belt drive automatic system,
and are constantly breaking down because of the electrics. I had the unpleasant
task of driving one even if it was just for a couple of miles. A sink bowl has more
rigidity than the plastic panels on the aixam. If dented, you can take a hair dryer
to warm the panel and pop it back into position one handed they are that thin!!

With the weather being good, Monday night produced a orangey/red
moon and a rare reflection on the north sea.

Image

As there is nothing to do at the relatives house clearance. I turned
back to doing work on the car.

As dad has decided to move stuff around, I need to get the bumper
back on the car so it doesn't get in the way or get damaged!

So the cooling fans need to be fitted up front first.
A strip of aluminium angle used on the front of the fans bolting into
the angle iron which has been pop rivited to the slam panel.

Image

Image

The wiring harness then cable tied to the aluminium to keep it out
of the way and to make it look neater. I will do the same on the
other side.

Image

The upper fixing bracket needs replacing as I made a slight
miscalculation on dimensions, so I will need to get a slightly different
bit of aluminium as it wasn't quite wide enough. but that can be done
without having to remove the fan. So I will make a start on the other
fan, and get the replacement bit of aluminium angle when I go out
shopping in the week.

A few things I forgot to mention. Over the past few days I have been
getting a few things for the car and something for dad's birthday which
is coming up soon!

First the car bit's

1 pair of Battery Terminals which can take multiple cables better than I
could have wanted rather than mess with hot lead or solder trying get
them into one hole or point. I wish there had been plain silver type metal
rather than the gold which looks a little tacky!

The positive side has been fitted.

A Chrysler/Jeep over head console £20 including tax and postage.
These connect into the canbus system and displays the info like it would
in a voyager/intrepid/ram (Lets hope it works as simply as I have said :dunno: )

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320969058370? ... 1439.l2648

Image

And the final thing I bought for the car a set of 4 VW Beetle 16 inch
steel wheels. Yes one of them is dented, but remember I have 2 of
these rims in the tool shed. So now I can get the steelies all stripped
and painted when they arrive. Then I can get the old rotten alloys off!
Cost £1 for them and £50 courier charge, it would have cost me more
getting them from a scrapyard plus petrol

Image

And instead of a birthday card I got dad this, and it came this morning. yes
he did think it was funny, and does like it. He wants to stick it on the garage
door!

This arrived by post at lunch time.

Image

Before it is stripped down for a little working tonight a picture of the
reverse side.

Image

The display unit removed.

Image

This is the real bit that needs to be worked on to make the unit thinner
here by about an inch or more to make it suitablr for the neon roof lining
and the led lights that will be fitted.

Image

A scalpel was used to carefully remove the melted plastic to free the light
unit from the cover.

Image

On this unit the light operated by a switch behind the lens which you push
to operate. which yoy can see are white in the photo.

Image

Image

After a little working the back of the lights has been opened out but not
totally removed as rhis would remove the strength of the structure

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now I just need to get the plug for the display as it didn't come with one,
and the led bulb replacement that will be fitted in.

Well today the replacement tow bar electric socket with a galvanised
metal cased one.

Image

A couple of small holes drilled into the 'C' bar and the bumper plastic.
so a couple of cable tyes coukd secure the plastic to the tow bar
bracket and hold the cables in place and off the exhaust back box.
As they are far enough under they shouldn't be seen unless your looking
for them.

Image

Onto the upper fan fixing bracket. The upper one in the picture is the
old one, which is not quite right.

Image

While I was about to drill the second hole into the new bracket, a delivery
van turned up with the 4 VW Beetle steel wheels. So off came the Alloy
wheels and on with the beetle wheels.

Image

Here is the state of the damaged steel wheel.

Image

Image

I know all the tyres are going to need to be replaced but they are
the wrong size for the car. I know that 205/50 r16 tyres have fitted
in under the spring base from past experience, but these aren't
them!

They are 205/55 r16 tyres, and they are wedged against the spring
brace on the strut on the rear of the car.

The 14 alloys and the steel spare out of the way. All the tyres look in
good condition they just need a clean.

Image

With the beetle wheels on the car temporally, it gives me a chance to
get the other wheels and tyres sorted out. I will deal with the beetle
wheels properly later down the line.

The steel wheel has a 185/65 r14 tyre, while the alloys all have 185/70
r14 tyres. All will be taken off by a garage which I will take them to in
the morning. The alloys with their centre caps will either be put up for
sale on ebay, or weighed in for scrap if they don't sell.

No pictures for todays stuff done.
After changing the wheels over yesterday and then loading them into
mothers Volvo estate then getting them out of car at the garage my
body is screwed.

Mother got to the garage too late in the afternoon to pick them up as
the garage had closed, so she said she would get them in the morning.

I shouldn't but did manage to refit the bumper bar back onto the front
of the car. I have used stainless steel nuts bolts and washers, so it
should be easier to take off later if needed.
