I would go for laminate, they only crack rather than shatter so you can still see to drive, the only issue is if moisture gets into the edges they go milky, just make sure you properly seal it( I fit them on a bed of silicone)

I hear what you're saying Kevin, but I've had experience of not using toughened in certain applications and it's not too nice (I'm a country lad and have seen daft things like tree branches going through screens!). Mind you, I don't intend doing much (ie any) offroading!

Alec was busy with Jack, his daft black Labrador when I called to pay the MOT bill, so I missed out on a chat with him - and an "assault" from Jack (he loves me because I smell of "interesting" bitch). Kev was of the opinion that toughened was better for my job; though I did point out that my friend's source will mean toughened is more expensive!

I've sent a message to the parts place, though not complaining: more a warning that someone has sold them iffy parts . I will see what they say - I can't think they will be impressed either!

I have some of that double-sided glazing tape and a tube of non-setting sealant for the new screen (though I bought the sealant for the kitchen), so that should give a nice waterproof seal without the aggro of removing old silicone when I break the next windscreen.

One good thing: the new grass seeds are producing one or two green patches where the Landy was parked over winter!

Us country folk and our funny ways eh....

Got to love a Labrador though, I've never met an angry one.

Laminted is supposed to be better for preventing things going through the screen (in either direction!), bullet proof glass is made of it (obviously many more layers).

My friend called this evening and said his glass "expert" friend threw a bit of a wobbler - apparently vehicle laminated glass is tempered differently to domestic glass and he wasn't prepared to do the job!

However, I now have a "new" screen, so I will fit that as soon as the weather clears up - the lawn is flooded at the moment and I have been sanding and priming doors for the kitchen cupboards instead of doing useful stuff on the Landy!

I got an apology from the outfit that supplied the cracked screen, though they said that they haven't any replacement screens now, so can't do anything! I can't blame them for not giving a refund - I too would be suspicious if someone came back after three months! Apparently their supplier is in the "Middle East" - which makes me wonder why - or when - the screen came in a "Genuine Land Rover Parts" wrapper!

Interesting bitch:

She is riddled with arthritis and has "Fatty Lumps", that start on her right shoulder and go through to her abdomen and make her look like she is full of pups (she's spayed) and can hardly move at times. If you feel her back, it's almost like a razor - very little fat at all!

However, she was spayed just as she was coming on heat and (according to a vet) they are "stuck" in that condition, so she has always been a tart - and had the boys queueing up to see her! Her method of greeting dogs was to check underneath and then go into reverse with her tail to one side - if the other dog was a dog!

I fear she is now in her last few weeks (if not days) and I'm going through the "emotional rollercoaster" as she has good days (like today) and bad ones (like yesterday).

It may not be as dodgy as it sounds. I have purchased lots of spare parts for my RR that were shipped in from Dubai. LR sold lots of cars over there and dealers all held mountains of spare parts which they don't need any more.
I have several unopened boxes of spares as "I know what's in them" so haven't bothered unpacking them (in some cases for years!). I think I will open and check all the contents at the weekend just in case.

I was sort-of thinking along those lines - or that JLR were sourcing spares from the middle east - so that explanation sounds reasonable Terry!

It's nice and sunny this morning and the old dog was up at half past eight (a couple of hours early for her!!), so I might get a good start with the windscreen and leave the cupboard doors until later on - there's rain forecast for later in the morning!

The dog has had a boring day - watching me change the windscreen!

It may have been easier if the person who "restored" it hadn't used silicone for everything that expanding foam couldn't seal! Apart from some scabby stuff in the top of the bulkhead, there's nothing exciting about the job - I couldn't do anything with the crud though, it was raining when I put the windscreen back in - the dashboard has had a wash at last!

Image

I'll have to go back to it later as there's no seal at the top of the screen and I've ordered a new one for the bottom too, so I can make a decent job of it later on.

Image

Don't you just hate it when people codge/bodge things - some clever person decided not to get a new door seal and just pop-riveted the old one to the windscreen frame! Note the workbench is filling up again!

Image

My stock of penetrating oils etc was useful - as was the propane blowtorch! The Halfords Shock and Release (or whatever it is called) was quite impressive - and might have worked by itself if I had tried it first!

You're missing the PlusGas. I swear by the stuff. A close second is Double T. As for WD40, it is good at dispersing water (which is what it was originally formualted for).

Sorry to hear about your dog. I lost my dog 9 years ago so I feel your pain. I never thought I'd have another but I ended up with a Border Collie. You get attached to your own dog.

There should be a can (not aerosol) of it about somewhere! I am a Plus-Gas fan too!

Some time ago (between 1998 and 2005) I called into an old fashioned car parts shop and the feller was having a clear out. I was after something for the tractors, not 1960s car accessories, but I have known the boss for about forty years now (and at least three shops) and he offered me a gallon (not 5l!) of Plus Gas at a silly price. I bought it, filled the small can and put the gallon can in the shed. The next year, I needed to refill the small can and only got it half full before the gallon can ran out! So, something less than a pint cost me over a tenner!

The dog was fed up because she wanted to go in the river when we went on our walk. There's little water in it at the moment and the "sand" is rather soft and sticky, so I wouldn't let her go off the grass. She hardly got home (the fatty lumps stop her breathing properly) and is downstairs - still sulking!

With luck and a fair wind, I might take the Landy down the road and try to free that clutch off. Progress at last - perhaps!!
