A reply has been received here. In fact, he called at 7 this morning! I assumed that the early communication meant that he wanted to shift the thing asap but no such luck, he reckons that he'd rather sell to someone who would keep it as a Hackney Carriage and as such, will wait and see whether this happens before offering it to me BUT.. Get this; he reckons that I should offer above the asking price if he lets me have it because its value would, apparently, be higher once the VED class has been changed to PLG and by paying over the asking, I'd be less inclined to flip it within a day of the V5 coming through my letterbox! I'm not even sure that he understands how the VED system currently works!
Somehow, possibly because I'd had a good night's sleep and am in a generally generous frame of mind today, I managed to decline without resorting to rude words.

No car is worth that kind of nonsense, apart of course from a cheap Fridolin with a semi auto already fitted. There will be other candidates for the job, Metrocab or Fridolin, something suitable but as yet unidentified or even another weird import, I have very little need for another car, the seller of that cab needs a buyer, so I win.
:P

the whole world seems to be full of cars that are unsuitable for you & the few that are available seem to be owned by people who don't to want to sell them to you.. you win the "diplomat of the year award" for not resorting to foul language or physical violence..
i will have to find you something else.. have you considered a pony & trap.. they take themselves home from the pub ;)

So why not go for something on two wheels? How about this 1942 Harley Pan Head?

Liking both that gorgeous old American motorcycle and the pony & trap idea. As one who has, many years ago, taken part in several pub crawls in a trailer that was being pulled by an old Fordson tractor, whose driver never had any trouble with the police even when he, his tractor and his trailer's occupants found themselves trapped in an escape tower one night, having decided that a tractor would make it back to the mainland following a drinking visit to Holy Island. The causeway always wins though, as you'd expect.

I do love these old Subarus, but I prefer this more recent one:

Better the devil I know and all that and yes, that is the Subaru badged version of the bB, which fits, works properly and, as I discovered today, isn't remotely upset by a couple of inches of snow on its roof. Following motorists liked the snow, they were showing their appreciation by flashing their headlamps and waving at me.
In my defence, the car is as tall as my standing height would have been and if folk don't like snow then they should damned well learn to keep a safe distance!

So, on the pony idea (pony as in the small horse, not the Weegie rhyming slang for a stool) . What's the insurance like on a pony, does it have a decent sized glove hole and what's the handling like on standard shoes?

I should be more trusting of human nature, the taxi guy did eventually get back to me again to say that he'd accept an offer of around twice his asking price. Am I heading deep into Englandshire then? Nope, as far as I know only bricks and mortar would be sold on an "offers over" basis and he shouldn't have put such a low value on the thing if he doesn't want to flog it!

Console yourself and feast your eyes on this. Taxi, you want an ex-taxi? Here you go:

Now that's a taxi! I love the way in which America finds it necessary to remind forgetful drivers of their vehicle's colour and purpose, by writing "yellow cab" on the door.
 I may take inspiration from this practice and write "polychromatic but mostly grey-looking daily transportation device with onboard accommodation" along the bB's flanks. That should work for the many folk who still ask me what the @@@@ it is!
