I wouldn't say I'm enjoying it but when I have finished a bit and painted it, there is a certain satisfaction of a job done.

I am really glad I have finished the bit at the side of the dash. No more worrying about setting fire to things inside the car (even with a piece of scrap metal inside) whenever I pull the trigger. Welding outside with the only thing on the other side of the panel being the ground makes for much quicker progress.

Shame about the forecast for the next week. After tomorrows rain I will find out if I still get wet floors or not.

No work today because of the rain (which is not going to leave for another week!) but the flying water has found 3 leaks I was not previously aware of. The windscreen is leaking down the drivers side and there is water dripping through under both bonnet hinges. I have to strip out the fuse box to get at the drivers side and heater to get at the passenger side. This is getting to be a mammoth task!

There was a short break in the rain today so I started pulling the heater apart so I could get the sound deadening away from the underside of the dash and found.......

I'm thinking the other side is going to be as bad and the middle will probably be worse as it is various curved shapes so it is guaranteed to make my life hard.

deep breath and go back inside out of the rain.

Not much time again today between showers but I did manage to do some unbolting / wire brushing / screwdrier prodding and have made some more holes.

I have had a poke and it looks like there is a seam across the scuttle which the outer panel apart from one 1" section appears to be solid but the inner panel is rotten through across the full width of the car. There isn't one length of more than about 2" where there is any real steel left.
To weld up the centre section I need to remove the heater which will require the a/c to be removed too. I will have to look and see how doable that is. To get at the outside I have to remove the intake from the engine and see how to remove the sound deadening / heat shield between the back of the block and the bulkhead.
I thought older cars were supposed to be easy to work on :?

Older cars are easier Terry. It may well date from 20+ years after the model first appeared but there's been a lot of technological evolution since then and so yours isn't that far adrift of a split new one. That said, you've made it this far so may as well see it through. :) You can do it.

More poking about, I have to remove the brake master cylinder to get at the drivers side. I'm thinking that it is going to be easier taking it apart and fixing the holes than putting it back together again.
This is how the metal is arranged currently vs how I intend on fixing it.

And to me, since it will force the water to run off somewhere else and not encourage it to weep through the seam. Go for it. :)

On with today's escapade. As the front panel is all but perfect I have decided to leave be and re-instate it as the factory intended but use some sealer between the panels at the top which LR neglected to do (they did seal them at the bottom)
Tomorrow will be the complicated bit where the bulkhead curves around behind the engine. it is solid across the scuttle (amazingly) but at plenum level it is totally rotten through.

Anyway, this is what I found after some poking about

Not much metal left there!

Even less after I attacked it with a grinder

Then I put some metal back in

Put the bonnet hinge mounting back and sealed it up.

That was more than enough for today.
