Well Tank is just behaving lately. I popped up to Carhaix last week to help a mate who was over at his little piece of land. He is THE 240 Guru! He needed his yearly day of help on his land . I gladly came to his aid. My 'payment ' ? A trailer full of oak for my log burner and an alternator from his stock of spares for "Tank". Current one works well, but the bearings are , well past their best

Also I have this ready to fit:

Lol

nope on both counts, though Elvis is a hero of mine ......?
No all the dash lights have died. So the plan is to wire a run of these for the dash lights and a run for the heater controls . Soldered into the feed for the clock, they should work with the dash dimmer. That's the plan anyway.
Idea stolen from here:

Smoke in the cabin coming through the vents with a nasty electrical whiff was not in my plans....
Have put it down to the fan blower motor. What a nightmare to get to
Will I ever get this back together......

Lots of bits in the boot!

Back seat is 'toppers' too.
The fan motor was not sounding at all healthy yesterday when I tried it without the engine going. Really struggled on speed 1 . Sounded like a strangled duck too.
Having said that, I could not see any signs of obvious heat damage, there was a feint electrical whiff, but that would be there on any old leccy motor?.
The noise is the bearing, no doubt there.
Anyway, I have ordered a new fan motor from PFV . Tank is now off the road until the new bit is fitted . Just hoping that the leccy smoke was from the fan motor!

Done a re-test on the fan with my spare battery. Runs fine on speed 3. So ran it on speed 1. Okay for a while, then slower and slower till it stopped. Kept it connected to power and it got hotter and hotter and began to pong in that all-telling electrical way... So theres the problem. New one should arrive during the week.
Whilst it is out, I have decided to replace the matrix too. As these have a nasty habit of giving out bigtime & dumping the coolant in the passenger footwell

Thought as it was stripped out it'd be stupid not to replace it. Don't wanna do this jobby twice!!!
So a fellow volvoist is in one of my gites, after my hunting the web for a day he gave me a site & they only have them 'on the shelf'
So ordered one today.
