Datsun 120Y/140Y auto wanted.

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

It might be simpler just to club together and pay for some therapy.

That's exactly what my "remove the ads" donations have been paying for all these years. That and beer, mmm, beer.

Chris, between the start and the end of your list, I found that my existing reading specs had become obsolete, as a result of the extra load placed on my eyes, and had to make an appointment at the optician's place. I'll maybe get that list finished this week but there are some intriguing motors in the parts I've seen so far. One of which would actually fit the bill!

Pug 205 also a suitable candidate and I do like big, old RWD Volvos but the Aisin-Warner auto in those is rarely without a leak from the propshaft oil seal's habit of grinding its own groove in the nose of the shaft. I'm not up to doing much stuff myself these days and removing the propshaft, fitting a Chicago Rawhide sleeve, pulling and replacing the oil seal in the end of the 'box and then knowing that it would be incontinent again after another year or two of motoring; too much hassle.
The Renault 25 is a great old barge too and the 21s with similar spec that I've had as modern dailies were capable of squeezing under my work sponsors' MPG limits to qualify me for ongoing fuel payments. Hardly Minor or Datsun-like though but, is it? Er, yes, slightly now that I can't stop squinting.

That's lovely! Regardless of its status within the (old/retro/clathick) car movement, it's a clean, inviting, highly practical little wagon and seems to be fairly priced. A more sensible man than I would buy that, soak it in Ensis V to preserve it as is indefinitely and spend a few extra quid on a part-time chauffeur to take care of the piloting duties. I had a red one like that, but without the rear seat and side windows, for a short while between my earlier 120Y saloon and the Renault 12 that became the terminally rusty, then six or seven year old GMS124S' long-term replacement. UCU752Y (that red 120Y van) was supplied by Blackshaws of Alnwick and turned up in my life again in the '90s when my home was in Windsor and the window man used it to carry his ladder and other equipment. He seemed bewildered when I went all emotional over his work van, turned out he had driven up a 4x4 from Blackbushe to sell at the TCA auction site in Palmersville and had bought UCU in the same sale to get himself home, where he knew that the van would be worth more only he fell for its charms on the long drive back and just kept it. 8-)

Yes, Rich, along with the engine (different crankshaft, different bearer plate [part of the block casting on the 1200 and 1400 A series Datsuns, so swapping between engines not an option] & different manifolds) then there'd be the flex plate, plus the auto pedal box, diff (or it would be far too low geared to benefit from torque converter advantage) and various other bits. And if I could find that lot, 99% of them would be going into the Minor shell, so if I did find the auto equivalent of that car, or the earlier B210-style Sunny, I may well run it if it were a straight example. But, if the assorted conversion parts should show up in the meantime, the Minor would go back on the road.

I guess the ideal would be finding a Sunny auto estate that comes with a full set of spare mechanical components included in its price, that ways, I'd get the best of both worlds. I know there's more chance of winning simultaneous jackpots on all of the lotteries but even that would be a start.
I'm currently trying British car specialists in Japan as they got the Midget with the Datsun A series engine instead of that godawful large journal Triumph thing that late UK market Midgets were cursed with and that was available with the auto option. A friend of the sis-in-law beast's family stays out in Japan and has offered to help with postage if anything suitable turns up on Yahoo.jp. I wouldn't otherwise have considered looking there as their registration and purchasing rules are a bit complex but when a Japan-based sponsor is available, Yahoo beats eBay hands down. I've already registered and tested the water by buying some rare old audio gear via Yahoo and this may yet be the way to find the car stuff I want. Purchases made on Yahoo.jp are all packed at Yahoo-owned and operated specialist premises in Japan and to a very high standard, so getting things back here isn't too bothersome.
