Ooh! indeed. Under that rakish, almost car-like body, that there Cruiser is essentially the same vehicle as my rather taller 4wd Toyota, apart from the white truck's bigger engine. Mmm, big Diesel engine, me like. Imagine how quickly I could die at the wheel of the tall van if it had even more torque than its 2.8 ltr Diesel can provide.

On that rather tasty LWB series 1, I'm with GHT on that one, but I'd have to employ someone to drive one of my Toyotas behind it when travelling anywhere, just in case I had designs on going there and back , in sympathy with the Australian love for ancient Land Rovers, combined with absolute trust in Japanese 4x4s.
That said, if another Discovery S1 automatic (300TDI or V8 petrol ) was to appear reasonably locally with decent prospects of lasting a year or three, came with side steps and didn't have ABS, cruise control or airbags (the crash protection devices, only S2s had those in their suspension as far as I know), I could be persuaded to do something daft.. Again, though the daftest course of action would be to throw loads of cash at the tall van, with a view to creating a zombie proof, off grid home from home without the indoor rain and with far, far better habitation area heating. I have the essentials (great chassis & oily bits, pleasant to drive and trustworthy), so why not eh?
Rich, get yourself up to that Aussie import HiLux's Scottish location, buy it, drive it home and report back once you've done it please!

This will probably get me some stick, but you know that popular TV program, "Strictly Come Dancing?" Well Latin & Ballroom dancing has been an enjoyable past time of mine for over sixty years. My missus and I used to compete in amateur dance competitions. Let me tell you, it can be an expensive hobby. The dance wear that many have run into a ransom size figure. We are lucky in that my wife's other passion is dressmaking. She has made most of our dance wear.

One of the best cars that we ever had was a 2.5litre, series two, BMW. When travelling to one of those competitions we would hang our dance clothes on a broomstick pole, lodged between the two grab handles over the back seat doors. When not in use the handle would just about fit into the car's boot.

Collecting the car from service one day, the fitter asked my wife: "What's with the broom handle?" "I'm a witch," she replied, straight faced. He looked bemused but fell for the bait. "So why do you need to carry your broomstick then?" He asked. Still straight faced, my missus replied, "in case the car breaks down." He never asked again.

Ght, your missus sounds like a good laugh
