You are such a defeatist
Terry I think John does it just to wind the rest of us up    - wanting unavilable fibreglass minis (and when thay are available they are in some far flung country that you cant get them out of), Datsun drive trains that are near extinct etc - personally I think Mr JPB is getting more pedantic in his wants as he gets older - it's time he got a bit more realistic like the rest of us ! (NOT) :o

YES - along with myself - in fact that's the reason why a certain section of society call me 'Grumpy Northener' (they call me other things too but let's not get into that)

These guys built a 4x4 out of an FF engine and box. you could do the same (you may not get to keep the back seats though)

I'm not an awkward squad, but what some folk call me might rhyme with that. :x ;)

Maybe we could convince a TV production company to head a new programme 'Grumpy Old Classics' - we already have the cast sorted

Now that's not a bad idea! We could be on one of these newfangled, commercial channels and be sponsored by a brewery.

OR, he wrote, feeling frustration creeping up on his ass; I could live with a complete, well kept Datsun 120/140Y auto that could be preserved and not robbed of its guts, in which case the Minor could be built up as a lightly modified, 1275cc car with some big brakes and a stock gearbox then flogged on to a suitable new custodian who could change their own gears and operate three pedals at the same time whilst humming the theme tune to "Some Mothers Do Have 'em" and salivating at the thought of the paste sarnies and Tizer that they had stashed away in the glove hole(s), ready for the lunch bell to sound.

My first 120Y, GMS124S - only a six year old car at the time - was bright yellow with a giant Lee-Cooper decal on the boot lid and had no box sections left along the wing rails, a hole in the boot floor that could have served as a means of dropping a spy out of the car into the manhole cover that led to his/her secret lair, without arousing suspicion and had the most worrying diff noise at anything over 90mph so the bar is set pretty low.
My ideal daily old car would still be a subtly modded, automatic Minor and that's not a bucket list entry, just common sense.
