Landrover's (lack of) reliability is a key factor in their (lack of) populariy amongst the off- road enthusiasts here in the UAE. Most of us drive Jeeps, Nissans, Toyotas or Mitsubishis. Interestingly, Landcruisers are not a very common choice - most of the Toyotas are FJ Cruisers

Interesting that they cite "emissions" regs.
Now considering that defenders have had a variety of engines in there (I believe the current one is out of a transit) it's inconceivable that things like particulates are the issue, as that would come down to sourcing an up to date lump.

Is this one of those, all vehicles must now emit less than arbitary value of CO2 per km?
Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound

Biting. It's like kissing except there's a winner

The Transit engine currently in use doesn't meet the required emissions regs for 2016 so they would have to re-engineer the drive train again. It doesn't score well for pedestrian or occupant safety requirements now so it is only a matter of time before the EU squash it on those anyway. Building it is VERY labour intensive as it is largely hand built in turn making the profit margins smaller. I suspect these two things combined with it's falling market share (due in no small part to it being majorly uncomfortable to drive for long periods) is enough to make it uneconomic to continue.
It will be missed but is long overdue replacement. Land Rover have all but missed the point that the reason they are who they are is because of the Defender. If they stop producing it with no off-road orientated replacement they will just be another car manufacturer.

For as long as I can remember every couple of years we get warned of the Defender's imminent demise. Why should we believe it this time?
