Funny how it's cool and interesting when rally motors do it but when a modern car does it (to regenerate its DPF with an active cycle), then it's feckin' annoying.

On a daily driver a quiet exhaust is best. On long runs a noisey exhaust is tiring and annoying

On that I agree, but with reservations. I'll make an attempt to explain why, and hopefully start a discussion.
I make a trip of 300 miles each way on a regular basis. To make this trip, I can choose from 1 of 5 vehicles. As a yardstick, I'll use the newest of these, which is a Honda CR-V. I'm sure some on here have driven one, or a similar car. They are a quiet, reasonably well made car. Quiet, that is, until the same trip is made in my next oldest vehicle, which is an american made SUV. Everyone that has passengered in it back-to-back with the CR-V says the same thing."God, its quiet!" which makes it a prefereable vehicle to use.
Next one, agewise is the first of my classics. That is so quiet, its surreal! So smooth and quiet, some passengers start to feel nauseous! Which is the first of my reservations. To quiet can be bad for some!
Now we come to my second classic. Even though it is original-ish, and within the law, its NOISY! But, the noise comes from a V8 which I find soothing in a way. But, both tiring and fun on a long run.
Then we come to the fifth car, or rather van. Noisier than the first three, but quieter than the last is my diesel Transit. For some insane reason, that is far preferable to me on the above run. I'm not sure why, perhaps because its somehow more fun...which is my second reservation, and poses a question. Could it be that if a vehicle is more fun to drive, noise or other faults can be disregarded?

are you my double?? i had a 2.5 diesel transit 190 lwb non turbo..deafaning on the motorway but i loved driving it.. now i have a 2.4 transit tipper... i love driving that too

I would like to be able to switch my V8 from purring to hellraising,like some of the modern sports cars with exhaust diverter valves.

There used to be a "diverter valve" that did just that - a sort of "Y" pipe with a flap that selected one side (going to the silencer) or the other (to open exhaust) for those who raced their road car (or as it's now known "Track days"!). I wonder how many of then "stuck" in the race position!
