Hi guys
well we have disaster!!!......to explain.....firstly after all the work with the drive the gear box has redeveloped a nasty clunk again so much so that the car is moving slightly forward upon engage....... I'm a little perplexed now as it was fine for a small while now doing the clunk again, having replaced the whole braking system I am wondering if the brakes still have air and are not sufficient to hold the car.
secondly there is oil dripping at the base of the sump and I suspect the crankshaft oil seal. looking at the position of this seal I am concerned that it is either an engine out job to replace it or a gear box out, unless anyone knows better?.... Its a good amount of oil so have to be dealt with.
I am a little upset here but maybe I should take the opportunity and have the gear box and engine overhalled so I know its good nick.
At the moments its 2 steps forward and about 6 backwards!!.
cheers
lee

Have another look at the kickdown cable. Make sure it's returning fully. If you think that the adjustment might be incorrect disconnect the clevis and see whether the clunk disappears. Dont drive it with the cable disconnected.
PS don't forget the idle speed, if it's too high that will cause the problem.

The chances are it's a rope seal, and providing you can get the engine sump off, most of them can be replaced with the engine in-situ using a chinese finger tool. You just have to buy an extra long seal for the top half to give enough for the tool to grip to.

Be very careful who you get to do it. Loads of people take them on and talk a good job, most of them haven't got a clue what they're doing.

Hi there Harvey
I will disconnect the kick down cable at the weekend and see if that has an effect. I set the idle to 700 revs this evening when I was around my dads. I will get my dad to disconnect it in the morning and make sure it is retracting fully before doing and engagement test. (will warn not to drive!!)
interesting about the seal I will investigate it on Sunday and in the mean time order up a replacement strip.
thanks for the help Harvey.....always appreciated.
best regards
lee

The Mrs just caught me looking at that advert and I have just been told to "stop looking at more old cars!" and "you have more than enough of them as it is"
It does look like a nice project for someone. It would be a shame for it to become a spares car but better that than it all going for scrap or around an oval.

Buying a complete car seems like a complex way of solving a simple adjustment issue with a kickdown cable but hey, any excuse to buy an extra car has to be a good thing.

Hi there JPB
well its the difference between need and want I guess. If I had the room I would think about it but I will stick to getting my old girl running properly. I hope to be adjusting cables and sorting out seals tomorrow...
best regards
