G SHARP

Got something to say, but it's not classic related? Here's the place to discuss. Also includes the once ever-so-popular word association thread... (although we've had to start from scratch with it - sorry!)

Interesting you say 15 cents flat.
I tune by meter thingy. Normally to drop D. I like to boogie on a saturday night. I shall flatten my G 15cents and see how it sounds.

I have the odd jam with mates usually more larking about than actually playing. We aren't very good. We have murdered a few songs. We can't be that bad though, because the neighbours threw bricks though the window so they could hear us better. LD.

The only time I use Drop D is when I playing something that uses Barrel chords.

Do you use Slinkeys?

Any decentish guitar will have a compensating bridge, set for standard tuning, so no need to mess about, just tune to a G if you're using standard tuning. If you're using an open tuning, there are about a zillion variations, probably a double zillion, just on G alone, which will all have their own strange backwoods name! Just mess about and see what works.

Er...drop D tuning is on the E string, not the G...It makes it a lot easier to play certain songs, mostly rock/blues. One finger is all that is needed to play a chord on the three thickest (E-A-D) strings as they then become D-A-D. Added to that, the sound is "heavier."

Theres quite a few memorable songs written and played in Drop D.

Thats what I meant drop E to D. Thus DAD. Which is a power chord. Also I have tuned the strings to 5ths.

I mess around with tuning a lot.

I am not a good guitar player and just mess around making a lot of noise------- fun.

When I was a puppy I used to play a bit of classical guitar, even took a few grades in it. I find now that my fingers really don't work well enough and my left wrist get pretty sore (touch of arthritis I think given theres a couple of little nobbles where they didn't used to be).

Anyway, I find nowadays, that standard tuning from an electric tuner, and simple basic Barre chords plus a traditional E, say a traditional low non Barre open E and then Barres of F A B C D E in their variants of sharps and flats / minors and sevens, played between the first fret and the 12th work well for most tunes I want to murder.

You can get all the noise you want when playing alone by varying the rhythms and laying on and off the chords as you go to add more sound / rhythm variation.

Only downside is I can't get a Carter lick going for country but even then those simple chords lend themselves nicely to any variant from Country through to Rock.

Anyways, If some of you don't already do it this way this video I found on Youtube shows it in the most simple way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsRu8eGNIM4

I am right handed and my right hand sometimes seizes up and goes claw like. It lasts for about 10 mins. Warm water helps.

I just like being noisy.

I am a big fan of Tommy Emanuel. He's sort of percussive. Long before I discovered Tommy I was playing like that. Except I murder songs and he doesn't. Check out Tommy playing Arthur Smiths guitar boogie shuffle. He plays acoustic and pulls the neck back for vibrato.

Hes at Glastonbury and on you tube.

I am not very good but its only me that is being entertained. I will have a go a any instrument.

I have had so much fun with guitars. Music can't be broken you never know the next note might a good one.

You tube has some good how to on guitar thingys.
For scales pianology site good and wikipedia. Because I know the scales and other bits of music theory I sound better than I really am.
