Thanks. I have the free breathing variant with Holbay engine and twin Webber 40 DCOE carbs and no air filters.
I have yet to get the car booked in for the MOT, but have been running it during regular maintenance bouts. Have added a teaspoon of Red-X to each pot, and fuel, and slowly but surely it seems a tad better; still not perfect. As suggested I will do the compression test "wet", but Easter got in the way, take it for a blast when I take it for the MOT and additionally get them to check the gases.
Cheers,
Andy

I'd be fitting trumpet socks for when you're driving it. Make sure they're decent ones as the cheapies tend to collapse and get themselves eaten by the engine. These can be taken off for shows but running with no filtration at all isn't a good plan.

Thanks John, I had wondered about these. Could you recommend a good source / make? Andy

I used to run this brand of socks on Amal carbs as fitted to some of my kittens and Rebels. They weren't too noisy by the standards of the breed and the first engine on which I had these lasted for 170,000 miles before it died as a result of corrosion that had by then turned the crankcase to dust. Its liners and rings showed no signs of scoring or indeed any signs of the engine having eaten large particles so I can say for definite that the socks did their job well.
