Well I have driven it today.. it's not bad.

it does like the choke out ALOT, you try to encourage it to run along with out it but it does not like it.. god knows what my Gas milage is at the mo..

But it's going along. Drives quite well other than that. Suspension is very nice and smooth, only issue is the need to have bloody big arms to turn the steering wheel.. I did pump the tyres up and that made a difference..

Sounds like it could do with a tune up, mind you if its not been run for a while the carb will be well grotty.

Time for a strip and clean of the carb me thinks, then a prpper setting up of the fuel mix.

Just had the same thing with a G plate A series Metro, a tune up did wonders (and a bottle of injector cleaner).

I had issues when I went to get the Tax on the car.. the log book I have been given was not the current log book and as it has a stamp on it.
and that the PO had told the DVLA that they have sold the car to a trader. So it looks like I will have to go to the DVLA office in Portsmouth to do this another trip..

Yeah your prob right as it's not been used much.. I took the seat belt apart and found that there is a pendulim in their that locks the belt.. just seems odd knowing it will work if and when there is an accident.. I hope..

I cleaned it all up in there anyway.. and it does lock. when you touch it.. so I guess you brake hard it moves and locks in place. I hope that's safe..

anyway.. I don't want to get the paint yet as it means driving up the road where the Police are always out looking for people.. I know I am insured and Mot'd and I have my half of the logg book but would rather wait till I get the paper work to them..

I'd recommend joining the owners club, - I was an early member, I'm not at the moment as I don't currently have one , but even 15 years ago they were busy buying up ex dealer spares stocks, that's where the membership fees went, no swanky HQ or anything like that, and they will have tons of NOS that you won't be able to get anywhere else.

does any one know if you can buy the panels?

I would like to sort out the front valance.

I could make a new one but really if there is a new one I would rather cut it out and fit it in place.???

I put 27psi in the tyres ESP The fronts.. I am thinking of putting in 32 cos it's still abit tough on the corners you have to ready your self for a corner.. unlike my 69 Porsche which is two fingers to turn it.. and the 70 Merc is just one finger The allegro is two hands and poss the help of the passenger

Now the radio lights up but no sounds.. hmmm I can't get the needle to move so I am guessing it's buggered.. shame I would have liked some lar lar's coming out while driving along.. I will leave it in there as it's orginal.

I have been kindly offered a Square steering wheel for it.. I am going to say yes as it's different..

does any one know if you can get a replacement front valance as my one has rust on it and I would like to change it..

Macsfactors in king's lynn may have one i try and find his phone number as he is very good. Nice to see another surprised allegro owner like me i brought mine not even looking for allegro i was after another mk1 escort has i just sold it to someone as they kept compaining that they wanted an escort mk1 to do up, saw the allegro on ebay only 6miles away thought i should have a look and was surprised how good it was terms of body rot compared to my escort mk1 so went home and bid and won it for £75 tuke it home and it been there ever since as i started to return it to factory condition as it only done recorded 40,000miles from new just badly stored. that was two years ago repaired around the front windscreen and started on the boot floor corners hopely i get it on the road soon. very underated little car with surprisely cheap insurance

.......I've never driven one with what even the wimpiest of folk call heavy steering unless it's been poorly serviced, so you have a problem, luckily not too hard to sort. If you want heavy steering try my Vitesse with it's 12" steering wheel and 3.5 turns lock to lock Herald rack!!!!! Now that's what I call heavy!!!!!!! and even then it's only heavy at parking speed......it's what you'd call extremely direct at road speeds

The track rod ends obviously may be dry but you'll need to look at the swivel hub balljoints, that's most likely where the problem will be.There's two each side, top and bottom, each of which has a grease point and may well be bone dry and stiff or even rusty inside if nobody has been near them with a grease gun for a while. They also need carefully setting up with varying thickness shims, it takes a while but done carefully and properly and with properly lubricated swivels the steering won't be remotely heavy!

One other thing to check, the tie rod end brackets under the valance rust away and the steering goes right out and becomes very heavy, it'll also pull badly to one side in this case however.

thanks I will look at this at the weekend.. I am prob saying it's worse than it is.. but I have been abit cushioned when it comes to lUx motoring and all the mod cons this is one of my classics and you will see why it's chalk and cheese to the Allegro..
