Cheers John, I'll help him along all I can so the advice is much appreciated.
I think the chances of the seller doing anything for the boy are slim, he's the sort of character that will have your eyes out while having you think he's doing a good turn, but he isn't meant to mess me or mine about.
Lets just say he'll have p**sed on his chips when he needs something now, which he inevitably always does.

As John says, reshelling the bottom end is easy enough on these engines if caught early.

Yes, I'm hoping we may get away that. Now the ignition system is in fair order, At cold the engine starts easily, runs very sweetly with no undue noises and the oil light goes out. It is just as it starts to warm up the problems begin & given it was on the road a couple of weeks ago with no obvious smoking when I have seen it I'm hoping it is in the early stages of failure.
So, if we get away with the bottom end re shell, I guess the rest will be down to what we find in the bores. You never know, we may get away with new rings. Did I once read somewhere there is a problem with going much over 20 thou with a rebore on these engines?
If we are at early stages with no scoring to the crank and acceptable end float, then I'm guessing the minimum to do will be...
New shells, new oil pump, + deal with whatever we find wrong with bores / rings and head.
Is it good practice to change the oil pressure relief valve also? Anything else we should be looking at doing whilst in around things?
