Thanks guys.
Did a bit of research and it looks like Terry's version of the problem and fix is well documented so I will have a go.
Just an aside can I download this fixer thing on an Apple lap top or does it have to be a machine running windows?
Sorry more idiotic questions I'm sure but I do appreciate your help

One question; as you have a Mac, why are you bothering with filthy old Windoze in the first place?

As long as you have a normal FAT formatted USB stick (they all are as standard) then it will work in both your mac and a PC.
Let's not start the Apple vs Microsoft arguement again please.

Classic scam by the looks of it. Variation on the You`ve got 50 million virus`s on your pc, and we can help one... Best thing to do with any of these types of websites is to disconnect from the internet and run your existing anti virus software. I`d be inclined to use Spybot / Avast although there are other good freeware antivirus bits of kit.
The worst thing you can possibly do is click on anything and co operate with them!

Not wishing to fuel the apple vs windows debate and knowing that Apples are resilient to infections would this 'thing' have attacked my Appple in the same way o would it have been able to get in? Just curious.

This particular infection would not have caused a problem for your Mac. Keeping your Windows PC up to date and not visiting dubious websites is the best way of staying safe. If you have XP then it is time for an upgrade as XP's security is at best poor.
There are types of malware that do run on apple products. There are fewer as apple have a comparatively small market share very few people put effort in to making malware run on safari.

D'oh!
Now he tells us.
There is of course a far better way of staying safe, but I'll be ticked off severely for mentioning it here so instead, here's a picture of what we
should be using the internet for:
Awww, bless.
