Is this too far gone?

#1 Post by TerryG »

I have fancied a 2 door range rover for YEARS (but can't afford to buy a good one). I have found this on the bay of e

Does it look too far gone to save? The only time i have held a welder is a TIG at the PC workshop a few years ago.
Sills are avaliable off the shelf but the chassis looks like it has more air than metal at the back and A post rust is a bit worrying.

I have 2 4 doors at the moment (one will be going on saturday though) both cost less than a grand to buy in reasnoble order but there is something about an early 2 door car that appeals. I don't want to end up with a pile of rust on the drive though. I get enough grief for the one i use every day!

The early ones are lovely. Certainly not too far gone. Go on you know you want to.

could you find a good body & fit it to a reasonable 4 door chassis?

IMO that's way too far gone unless you're planning a complete rebuild on a replacement chassis. If the bits we can see look that bad, there'll be an awful lot more grief under the surface - and don't forget that under all that bodywork there's a steel frame rusting away. I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole, but then I'm not the greatest fan of Range Rovers. (I could never come to terms with the fact that I'd be driving the mechanical bits of a Land Rover, with a whole tonne of unnecessary bodywork sitting on top.)

Definitely restorable without too much hassle. I have a mate who's been driving round in one far worse than that and just working his way around the holes as he gets to them. Remember you need to have the space to separate chassis and body. Chassis rails are good thick steel when you get to it, so it's not a big faff to weld. If you don't fancy the rear cross member, just get another one with a decent one, chop and weld.

Early 2 doors fetch good money, so altogether I'd say it's worth it.

Someone's put the steering wheel on the wrong side!

I have definitely seen worse ones (my 4 door is bad but at least the chassis is solid).
Under cover i only have space for the body or chassis at once as my mog lives in the same garage and i wouldn't put it outside. I do want it but i don't want to end up with a bottomless pit. I haven't seen a 2 door project come up for a while then i find 3 all in the same day!
A rebuild on a new chassis would be an option but at £1500 off the shelf it would make it prohibitively expsneive.

This is one of those times when your heart says "you know you want it" and your brain (and bank manager) says "steer well clear!"

It would be a superb toy but i don't fancy a 10 year restoration project like some you see.
