Vulgalour's Classic Car Artwork

#1 Post by vulgalour »

My old artwork thread is over here: http://practicallyclassics.phpbbhosts.c ... f=3&t=4970

I do artwork for a living, it helps me afford tinker time on my classics. I do it for fun too, so it's not all work and no play. You can find me on Twitter @angyroper and on DeviantArt http://art-of-angyl.deviantart.com/ but I'll post here and other places too if you don't use those sites.

So let's catch up with 2014's artwork first.

This one was an enjoyable commissioned piece of a recently completed Triumph Herald. I have a feeling the owner is on here but I haven't been able to find a build thread. Instead I've been following his updates on Twitter as he turns it into a nicely modernised version of a much loved classic. Magic Roundabout themed and A3 in size.

Another A3 commission, this time of a Mazda 929 estate which was something of a rarity when new and practically extinct now. I really enjoyed working on this one which is completed entirely in watercolour.

This one is highly relevant here as it's the ex-Practical Classics Volvo now being enjoyed by its current owner. Unfortunately the scanner did strip the subtle shading out of the cream, but other than that the picture survived relatively unscathed. I do quite like these Volvos and I've drawn a few over the years but this is probably the best of the bunch I've done.

Practical classics aren't always on four wheels and as two-wheels classics go you can't get much more practical than the ubiquitous Honda Cub 90. This was done as a thank-you gift for the owner of the bike who trundled over to help me swap the doors on my red Princess just for the fun of doing it. A real gent and the sort of person that can help keep a project moving.

Finally, for this initial update, is my favourite picture from 2014. I didn't want to part with this A3 commission. It takes strong inspiration from all those marvellous 1960s car brochures with the background colour taken from the interior of the DS pictured which is a charming care-worn example called Iris.

More great stuff there. I like them all but the Honda stands out for me because it's the sort of thing that's so rarely celebrated in this sort of way. They seem to be pretty much taken for granted these days, which is a shame.

All the popular classics get plenty of attention, I'll all about the practical, the unloved and the unusual. Been a while since I updated here so I had better get on and do that hadn't I? Some of these are for sale if they take your fancy, prices include postage and are for the original pieces which are A4 in size unless otherwise stated.

Riley 4/72 - £40

Range Rovers - Commissioned piece

Cadillac
Not for sale at the moment. This is another experiment with brush pens and a limited range of colours, I hope to do more of these.

Beetle - Commissioned piece
Sometimes I draw cartoon characters and all sorts of things, just like this one. About time I drew a Beetle, obviously I've gone for an unloved 70s version rather than the more desirable early slopey headlight type.

1959 Chevrolet Impala - £20 inked or £40 in the colours of your choice

Austin Devon - £40

These are all worthy of wall space but I especially like the A40 Devon. Is that Foxy, the famous online bingo mascot?

Good to see more examples of your fine talent  . . . although I must admit that the wavy lines and dots spoils the Cadillac picture (sorry!)

It could be a relative of Foxy, is it racist to say all foxes look alike? Probably...

Opinions on composition are perfectly fine. Even though I do this for a living I'm hardly what you'd call 'commercial'. Artwork is still quite personal for me, if it stops being that then I walk away from it. That means that people aren't always going to like the way I do things, even more so if it's something I've done purely for myself. I'm okay with this, art is very often a personal thing and that's why I offer commissions so people can then pick and choose how they want me to create an image which in itself is a very rewarding process.

Oh, and I am presently open for commission work should anyone like something creating. In fact, it's rare that I'm closed to taking on new work.

I have to do about one a month because I see them trying to get to the chickens. 2 useful bits of information should you chose to do the same. Night vision goggles are great and breezeblock walls are not shot gun proof.
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

The chickens had it coming, sneaky feathery cluckers.

ANYWAY! In car art news, I realise I've not updated here in a little bit so here's what's being going off since my last update for you all.

First up is a Leyland National in watercolour. Original available for £50 inc. P&P to your door.
A staple of my childhood, the National, though not in the Welsh livery this one sports. I grew up with the old tri-colour chevrons on a white field of the Stagecoach company, interiors were usually scratchy orange affairs and smelled of hot engine, oil, sometimes vomit and always cigarette smoke. Happy days.

Next and most recently is the super rare and largely unknown Canadian-built Bricklin SV-1 of the 1970s. What a fantastic looking little thing it is too, just a shame so few were built.

I shall update again when there are more things to share.
