Branded advertising conversions

#1 Post by Grumpy Northener »

Originally built for the USA drinks brand 'Moxie' this 1929 La Salle tourer has a full size plaster horse bolted where you would normally find the seats - it is driven from the saddle position by means of a steering wheel with pedal controls at spur level - this is one of several various vehicle conversions that the soft drinks producer commissioned over a long period in order to generate publicity for the brand - the vehicle is currently for sale through a Netherlands based auction house - link below

There are loads of brands that converted everyday classic / vintage vehicles in order to draw attention to the brand name so if you know of any - lets have them posted here ;)
1937 Jowett 8 - Project - in less pieces than the Jupiter
1943 Jowett Stationary Engine
1952 Jowett Jupiter - In lots of peices http://Jowett.org/
1952 Jowett Javelin - Largely original
1973 Rover P6 V8 - Original / 22,000 miles

Well, first one that comes to mind in this country is the Outspan Mini, resident at Beaulieu Motor Museum IIRC:

Image

As you can see, the Outspan car is shaped like an orange, has orange skin-textured bodywork, looks like an orange - but is, in fact a Mini! Admittedly, a highly modified Mini.

The car has a top speed of 30 mph. At more than 30 it is unstable, and can roll over.

As you might expect, the car is a great success with children.

The Outspan Mini lives at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, but seems to get around quite a bit. It's done the HCVS Brighton Run more than once.

Six of these customised minis were commissioned by Outspan from a company called Brian Waite Enterprise Ltd. based at Bodium in East Sussex. They were built between 1972 and 1974, and were used on advertising campaigns both in this country and in Europe. One of the six is known to live in South Africa these days.

:D
Some people are like Slinkies - they serve no useful purpose, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them downstairs.

Outspan mini - I can recall seeing one of these in the flesh, it would have been in the early 70's at the annual Lord Mayors parade in my home town of Barnsley

This Daimler bottle car is housed at the National Brewery Centre at Burton upon Trent - built in 1923 the promotional beer bottle bodywork is original and is one of a handful that were produced for the 'Worthington' brewery brand

Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound

When I was a kid ( many years ago) I came across the outspan orange parked in a supermarket car park near my nan's in Romford, someone must actually have been using it.

Some time ago, I came across a 1938 La Salle, in RHD. Best thing was, it had every invoice, every service record, every tax disc, from new. It was priced at £30K, so tempting, but it would have cost me a considerable amount to demolish my garage and build a bigger one.

As for advertising vehicles, you can't go anywhere with seeing one of those Red Bull wotsits. Never drunk the stuff myself, I wonder if you can do the new penny Coca Cola trick with it. Drop a dirty penny into a glass of Coca Cola and will come out in mint condition.

I think if you dropped a penny in to a glass of red bull it would either dissolve or sprout wings and fly away. I am never sure why advertising a product as causing mutations is a good thing.
