The Department for Transport had originally pledged to let self-driving cars be trialled on public roads by the end of 2013.
Business Secretary Vince Cable revealed the details of the new plan at a research facility belonging to Mira, an automotive engineering firm based in the Midlands.
"Today's announcement will see driverless cars take to our streets in less than six months, putting us at the forefront of this transformational technology and opening up new opportunities for our economy and society," he said.

If sat nav can't even tell you the correct directions or take you to the correct address, what chance have you to stop the thing if it heads down the wrong side of the road or the wrong way on a one way street?
At least with a separate sat nav you can disconnect it and throw it out the window if necessary(done that!) after it tried to drown me in the Humber, river Wear, and yes the Tyne, allso the Ouse.
It took me 3+ years of constant pestering to get google maps to change their detais as they had my home as a main road and we did have vehicles trying to drive through even though it was blatantly obvious that it was private property.One of the neighbor's still has his garden marked with a public foot path and through their kitchen!
If my car goes somewhere I'd just as soon be there or goodness knows what the thing would get up to. Why on earth would you want a car without a driver? Could you ask it to go to the shops, do your week's messages for you, bring them home, unload itself then pack your freezer while you do something more interesting? And what about the roads where there's no satnav coverage available regardless of whose maps you use? I mean obviously the GPS device still knows where you are in terms of latitude and longitude but it would only know where the road was if it were on the map that goes with the system that the car uses.
Although not an MP, I see Boris is descriminating against older cars; I wonder how much this cost the SMMT
