I wouldn't argue, I know the V12's ran the GM400, but I've never seen one in a 6. I wouldn't go as far as to say there weren't any in the light of what you've said. Either way, whatever there in, I don't know anything much about them.JPB wrote: Harvey, I apologise for questioning your encyclopaedic knowledge of matters automatic transmission-related but later XJ6s did actually have GM400s
towing automatics

Currently over 35 years worth of fixing 35 boxes.
Hoping to reach 65 years worth of fixing 65 boxes.

Cheers John. If it's ok with you I won't put all that imfo Ref Smart cars in my 'little black book' for future referance. I think they are an awful abomination of a thing! Built to be a hairdressers car with barely enough room for a hairgrip. As for towing one I would rather attach a chain to each end and attach them to two Scammell recovery units and taking up the strain shout "Wish".

Re: towing automatics
I'm sure Clarkson did that with a Lada once.......
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

...If the thumb and pinkie on the driver's right hand are far enough apart to disable the wretched traction control at startup.
Short back & sides is it Phil? Hang fire while I come back with my best Mole wrench.

Re: towing automatics
Disconnect the drive shaft if you want to tow it for more then a mile. Else put it on a trailer.

phil i have a weakness for smart cars too
Re: towing automatics
John's smart car had a weakness..........
I'm not sure if I should post this in here or the accident thread but seeing as someone mentioned smarts.
I was in the tescos car park last night, a young lady in a pink smart 4+4 while parking slipped on the clutch and hit the car in front of her hard enough to push it 18" backwards, then she panicked, put it in reverse, shot backwards out of the space and hit another car on the other side. I will admit to laughing.

Re: towing automatics
Clutch? What clutch? It's the demons that reside deep within the clutch release servo control unit that cause these amusing incidents so for once we can't really take the cheap option and blame a woman.
