Contacting DVLA sounds like a good idea though they are reckoned to be quite difficult to deal with regarding modding / building etc, or possibly even better talk to ACE who if I recall rightly are well up on just about every aspect of modding. http://www.the-ace.org.uk/

Regarding challenger E Types based on XJ's ( I don't know about the Onyx's) but the Challenger E Type could be had as a kit or turn key built car, and was available from 84 to the early 90's so pre dates these current rules.

Don't forget in the eighties through a chunk of the 90's you could still reshell and do lots of other cool stuff without any real problems. It was with the introduction of the SVA rules in 1998 that everything got sticky. A lot of this was intended to regulate the kit car industry but has had wide reaching consequences.

Best bet is to be willing to swallow a Q plate if the idea is still viable, I don't think they carry the same stigma as they used to.

Did you see this section !!
""Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame. ""
A new chassis has to be one that was built for the car ie a new TR6 chassis or new bodyshell like you can get for a mini.
If you build a new chassis and its unique to the car you are creating then it even if it has 12 points for donor parts used it will either have a Q plate or may even be a new reg,and it wont get the donor car reg or an age related come to that!!
A few years ago when the challenger etc was new the rules were different!
My mate has an E type challenger with a rover v8 it is registered as a std XJ6 so keeps the reg but it pre rule change!
Anyway you seem to think its possible,so all I will do is wish you good luck, hope you have the time, facilities, deep pockets for R&D costs,IVA test and retest!
If you look to the USA you will find more than one owner who has radically modified his or built his own TR6 lookelikee using very few original parts and powered by BMW straight six turbo,Big V8's,all in one flip up shell on a tubular chassis and frame!
It might look like a TR6 but thats all!
A well maintained TR6 with no rust and looking good can be bought for £8k easy.
All the best!
My current fleet!

My daily driver since 1999.

Question therefore - can you put a private registration number on a Q plated motor ??

No. But it used to be possible to transfer off a Q to an NI plate. The DVLA stiched that loophole shut years ago.

For many owners of kits and special builds the Q is regarded as a badge of honour that says "I built this" to other road users.

I didn't know they still handed out Q plates. I thought they just gave you a registration related to when you registered the car. So you could have a "13" plate TR6 ;)
Understeer: when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer: when you hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: how fast you hit the wall.
Torque: how far you take the wall with you.

There must be a way around this - the various companies that build the very expensive Jaguar SS / C, D & E type, Aston Martin race replicas etc - never register their cars on a Q plate or a new reg - but in effect what they have built is a new chassis & body shell in a period style and then bolted modern mechanicals into them - so more or less a new car from various component / in house build sources - they are always on a age related / plate that befits the period style of the car - so they are getting around it somehow.
