Hmmmmm...where do I start?

Ive decided to build myself a TR6 replica. Cobras have been done to death, Healey 3000"s are common place now, even mk1 escorts are covered by rsr.

So TR6.

I was going to build on a Scimitar chassis, but the wheel base is wildly out, and as I possibly want to make a lot more than just the one, Ive decided im going to build this to be IVA compatible.

Now the bmw e39 rear subframe is so lush, im considering useing an e39 as a donor, scratch build chassis of mainly 2 4x2 box section rails, together with a mixture of 3/4 box and 1.2mm sheet.

This should allow the 8 points system to act in my favour, and keep it off a Q plate, and allow the transfer of an age related plate.

Im new to this, but I have been buying used but perfect panels, 2 doors, 4wings, bonnet, boot and front and rear panels......and last night I bought a rough and ready 1972 TR6 to take measurments from.

What I need to dangle out there is the price. Would you say £3k for a body, chassis kit, ready for a donor and chrome work is a good price, or too expensive?

With this kit the buyer will need a donor, front screen and rubber, 7" sealed beams, side windows, seats, and some bright work of there choice.

Or 5k would buy them a running car, ready for the test, but with the bearest of interiors.

The 8 point system allows for original car chassis or shell not subframes.
And making a bespoke chassis will mean its a full kit car and will need the relevant SVA/IVA test!
Even cars using an original shell,rather than a bolt onto the chassis kit body,may well be classed as radically altered,and need full inspection and engineers reports for safe construction!
Remember that on some marques,if they were submitted for the test, even they would not pass current regulations.
In my opinion the current market values on TR6's doesnt warrant a fake/kit,as you can still buy a real one for what it would cost,so no point really!!
You could always use a VW beetle floorpan and running gear,with a porsche engine in the boot,make a suitably strong tubular body frame,and hang a set of fiberglass racing panels off that,but it will always be a chopped up beetle!
Kits do have a place,but imho only where the value of the original is megabucks,its the only way of getting anything remotely like it.

Wierd...according to the government...and the dvla...I can actually keep 9 points

As ill be keeping the engine, box, suspension, steering and transmission

Are you saying the dvla and government are wrong? Hmmmm

Also.....whos modifying a TR6?

Also....just out of curiosity......what do you consider cheap? As a rusty runner full of bog, needing another 5 to 10k spent on it will cost £5000 to £6000, and a totally buggered wreck like I bought yesterday costs £1700

So suspension doesnt count as its not bolted to the original shell? Dang thats 2 less points

So axles dont count, as wont be bolted to the original shell, even though it unbolts of a shell....thays another 2 points gone

Engine and gear box, but again this bolts to the front suspension....and as you say cant be used...so thats an other 3 poimts I cant use?

Steering bolts to the front subframe.....dang I was counting on that 2 points

Oh wait......read that wrong.....I can infact use all of yje above and retain the non q

Just reread the post......e types are as cheap as chips, can pic one up for second hand mondeo money :)

so you have a knackered car with a chassis etc for measurements etc, are you going to use that as a basis & graft the bmw on?

Also just out of curiosity....do you consider a midget to be exotica and out of the price range of mere mortals? How about a mini? Mk1 escort? Karmen ghia?

Dont want to poke holes in your logic....but some people dont want a rusty TR6 with troublesome everything.....I want one thats as smooth as silk, never have to worry about rust, and I can buy racing bits off the shelf.....

Ill repair that tr6 with the panels ive bought to take molds from, then knock it back out on egay for pocket change....10 to 12k
