Acid Dipping Herald 13/60 Engine

Hi,

I have been struggling to find somewhere that can acid dip my engine block & cylinder head. A local chroming company can do it, but said that it must not have any aluminium on it as it. Obviously the Herald Block and Head are cast iron, but wasn't sure if there were any other metals contained in them.

Any ideas?

Nothing to worry you there, the all-iron small OHV is just that so as long as the water pump, thermostat housing (and some aftermarket inlet manifolds) aren't present and the block and/or head is completely stripped bare, go for it.

Acid cleaning sounds a bit drastic - in a lifetime involved in Aero engine overhaul and repair we only used acid dipping very sparingly for certain hot end components with stuborn deposts. Modern aqueous based chemical cleaning is very efficient and of course evironmentally acceptable, Is this not perfectly adequate

Hi Wicksy,

I think acid dipping is still pretty common amongst engine re-conditioners, albeit they're thin on the ground here in North Devon. Happy with either process if it gives the same result, that being the cleaning of all the water galleries etc. that conventional cleaning just can't get to.

Do you know anywhere in North Devon that can do this? A quick Google doesn't really find anything.
