TR4a Pulling to the left

#1 Post by Dazman1360 »

I recently replaced all the front & rear bushes with polybush items, front trunnions & ball joints, steering rack mounts, steering column bushes & flexi-joints, the car is now pulling to the left, it wasn't before with the old worn bushes. The tracking has been checked, twice (all ok), tyre pressures are fine, tyres are fairly new. Any ideas why it's now pulling?

Cheers

I'd recommend having the tracking checked again but this time with a set of scuff plates, such as the Gunson's "Trakrite". I say this as, when replacing rubber rack mounts with polys, unless the poly ones are pre-loaded (ideally overnight, in a pair of rack clamps in a vice) before fitting, they can be too spongy to adopt the correct positions relative to the clamps and it doesn't take much lateral movement at the rack to move its centre position to one side, which would mean that checking with conventional gauges would show correct alignment but, when driven, the car would want to centre to the rack, rather than the position of each wheel.

Another possibility: Does the TR4A have a moveable plate under the nearside rack mount as some other Triumphs do? That can be clamped down in the wrong position if the poly bushes aren't pre-loaded and will, when tightened down, cause slight, but detectable misalignment in the rack's position.

I only ever use my scuff plates when setting up wheel alignment on a car that's had new rack mounts and it's the only way to be certain that each wheel is actually travelling in the right direction relative to where you think that the centre ought to be. It's never failed me yet. ;)
