Escort buyers guide HAHAHAHA

#1 Post by megadethmaniac »

Anyone seen the above in this months Practical Classics?

Apparently the 1600 Escort had a 2491cc 6 clinder lump developing 841bhp?????????

The Mexico had a massively tuned 1593cc 4 cylinder lump with 951bhp???????????????

Anyone think the proof reader had a bad day

Anybody actually think any pre 80's escort is actually within a normal "practical classic" budget?

They are far too hyped up price wise to be "practical" for any normal Practical classic buyer, unless they have a "Ken Dodd" reserve under the bed!.

Far too over valued for what they are................

And don't start me on others such as "Classic Mini's".

That's what a rallying pedigree does for you :!: The Big Healey is another that commands a rallying premium. I must confess, a 1275 Cooper S would be in my dream top ten but not a Healey or an Escort (Saw a Twin Cam for sale at £65000  ).
Rules exist for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men.

That only counts if an example for sale actually has a rallying pedigree.

Road going versions sold through dealers generally do not have that pedigree so should not be valued the same as "A Historic Rally Car with a proven competiton history"

It's not just the Escort Mal, anything wearing a Ford badge gets a silly price, even Cortinas and Capris are spiralling upwards. If only I'd have kept all the ones I owned back in the early 90s...

I know what you mean.
Late 80's early 90's I used to pick up cars like these for peanuts as no one wanted them.

I did'nt see anything special in them and still dont, (apart from a few memories)

Every one has there own choice in cars regardless of age, but the idea of paying tens of thousands for a Mexico I could have driven off the forcourt astounds me.

As I said above, if I was offered (and could afford) one of the Manufacturers Works Rally Cars that actually had some competiton history, that would be a different thing.

I just dont agree that "factory" Models should command as much as a pedigree rally /race car.

Agree, it's got silly, but while there are people out there willing to pay that much for them, then it will only get worse. Just a pity the BL tin isn't following suit!

Are you sure the cars are actually making the money, or are you looking at asking prices? I've just had a look on a certain auction site and the ones that have bids don't seem to be silly prices - the ones with no bids are rather more expensive.

This has happened with the tractor market too. A year ago, my Fergy would have made £2K+ on eBay and most of the tractor mags had them in for that sort of price. When I sold mine in April, I got £1,500. There were some on eBay for around £2K, but they didn't get bids and were being relisted, other owners were asking for £2K + in the mags. This month's mag only had one or two with asking prices over £1100. The price guides still show them as worth £3K for the condition mine was in!

I have noticed a lot fewer items are being listed on eBay at the moment - and many are just getting relisted again and again. I suspect the lack of money is starting to bite now. But people are still setting high starting bids!

I don't know what makes them think that estates are worth more than four door cars, very strange that, estates are worth the least. It was good to see a buyers guide for the MKII Escort but I wish that had not used a Mexico for the feature car, it would have been much better to have used a 4 door L or GL (in standard condition) as so few are about now. Love my MKII's but wayyyyy too much fuss is made over the RS models. MKII Escorts do make a practical classic (even if they are expensive to buy) they are cheap to run and insure and they are so reliable, I have a standard 1300 L 1978 on a T reg and its often been put into use to cover daily duties while my more modern Audi (and the Audi before that) have let me down.
