For what it's worth I made a manifold for a TVR V8 conversion many years ago from m/s pipe, not formed on a mandrel. It took me ages and looked shite, too many welds. You would have to use oxy acetylene to get a decent weld, unless you have access to a nice plasma welder. I know s/steel sounds ...
