A Series engine numbers.

Not exactly a technical query, but I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

I have a MK2 sprite with the original engine very much the worse for wear. I have a replacement 1275 that I bought a while ago. The 1275 does not have an engine number plate, it was lost in a previous bit of block machining. I have no way now of establiching the number of the engine. If I put the 1275 in the car I need to give DVLA an engine number. Any suggestions on my best course of action?

As the engine has been rebuilt, can I assign it an arbitratry number of my own devising?

Why not just keep the original number and replace the initial 9 or 10 with 12? I don't think the DVLA have any rules about engine numbers so you could make up your own .. and in the past some engine builders/tuners did exactly that.

Thanks Gents, I like the idea of using the known good number with a revised prefix.

It's a bit naughty, but why don't you just use the same number from the existing engine? That way you could swap them on demand and no one will care?
