And anyway, he'd look a bit daft wearing snorkel and mask driving down the road! The flippers might interfere with pedal opperation too.

No-one would notice the snorkel and mask. The thong mankini would distract them...

Yes it has wire rope on the winch (and an used spare rope in the garage).

My air intake is about 3 1/2 feet off the ground (just below the headlight on the left side), that's plenty deep enough for me.

No Rich I am not, but I won't be fitting the intake pipe below bumper level like they are on
quite a few modern vehicles. And if I change my intake manifold, then the filter would be
between the rear bank of cylinders and the firewall above the exhaust manifold, which
would be even higher.

Engines run most efficiently with cold air which is denser. Mounting a filter above your exhaust manifold would reduce your performance and fuel efficiency. If you are fording correctly then there is no advantage in moving your air intake up higher within the engine bay itself. Have a look on YouTube for some videos on how it is done.

Anyway, back on topic:
Today I have been cutting out rust (or cutting out metal which was connected to rust which in turn was connected to air). SOOOOOOOO much cutting. (Thread update shortly)

Terry the air filter box on the mk1 neon is where I have just stated, above the exhaust manifold
behind the engine! In this you can see the airbox to throttle body pipe which gets warm as it is.

But the air gets warmed before it gets to the airbox because it is sucked through a pipe over the
top of the engine first!

Back on topic, With mother umming and arr ing over wither to get rid of the astra and get another
volvo estate, I thought it best to sort out a stereo and speakers etc ready. It looks like it will need
the plastic fascia repairing and respraying . So i spent a couple of hours swearing and cutrsing as I
stripped it down.

Took my mog in for her annual garage inspection today, straight through :)
Mr MOT Man suggested I should have new tyres for next years as they are starting to show signs of age.
I went through my log book and discovered that the rubber is 12 years old. Not bad :)
Now I have to decide, 4x new 145 profile tyres or a new set of "van" wheels and 165/175 rubber.

Give them a good burial by pulling a bunch of donuts in the car park before getting them swapped
Landrovers and Welding go together like Bread and Butter. And in the wet they are about as structurally sound
