MERCEDES 190, Nearly a classic

#1 Post by arceye » Sat Jul 07, 2012 9:49 pm

Just a couple of pics of my latest little project, hopefully it wont interfere with the Riley too much.

Its a 1990 Mercedes 190 2ltr, carb type with autobox. She's been stood two years since toppling into a ditch. In my opinion these are fast approaching "classic" status, and given two or three years she will be 25, the old threshold for historic status. So, for the princely sum of £125 I had to fetch her home. Me and the lad actually bought two for £250, he's got the other which is a slightly later diesel.

Anyway, Rather sorry for herself at the moment..

Findings to now are the obvious damage, a new wing has been ordered, I got two doors with the car but will probably not bother for now as I want to press her into service as a runabout soon, and don't want to get carried away until Rusty is finished.

4 or 5 small patch repairs required underneath round drain holes and front wing mounts, very minor and the rest seems very solid and the original underseal sound everywhere else.

She needs tyres, lights sorting, and the anti roll bar fitting, again one came with the car the original having been pulled out when she came out of the ditch.

Running leaves much to be desired at the moment, but I think thats probably down to a couple of years of stale petrol and possibly some clogging of the carb as evidenced by the exhaust smelling nothing like petrol fumes when shes running. I'll be giving the ignition system a going over which should help aswell. The engine for its own part sounds nice and quiet.

So hopefully a nice little side project that will see the road without too much effort, brakes and flexis were renewed along with front springs before going in the ditch, so with a little luck she'll soon be back on the road and I can improve her as I go.

Fingers crossed.......we will see.

Interesting, good luck with it. I had two of them once, firstly a 2.0 Auto (fuel injection)..not a bad car but kept giving niggly problems so sold it on when someone asked to buy it

I then bought another one, looked the nuts but was a manual...awful gearbox and economy so didnt keep it long

Nice! I'm putting 25K a year onto a 2L diesel 190 at the moment. Its starting to get a little smoky, and has pitiful quantities of power, but she's doing 49MPG and I got her for free, so I'm happy as a clam! :D

That 1990 one certainly does look nuts on those wheels, but it's doing well to last over 45 years without the horrendous rot problems that claimed many 190s before their time. :P

In fact I think that the really bad ones are already gone as every 190 I see these days seems to be in lovely condition.
Apart from James May's Cosworth engined one of course, which looked fine enough but was structurally a complete sack of pooh as I recall.
I love the things as long as they're subtle, metallic shades like the subject of this thread. Bold solids or white just seem lame on them. :|

Timing chains have a tendancy to break on these,
piston/valve interface will be the result,so any slight noise should be taken seriously.

When running......she really is nice and quiet, so I reckon it will be good to go. I'll certainly keep it in mind should any noises develop.

My only previous experience with the 190's was a 1.8e I had about ten years back, that went down as one of only a few cars I ever really regretted getting rid of. I'm hoping this one will prove as good :)

I had a 1985 190 2.0D for a little while. It was sort of an "inbetween" car for me. I went from a 1997 Ford Escort TD to a Ford Mondeo TD and in between was "Monty". it had 250K miles on it and it ran like a clock. Good on diesel, manual gearbox which is ok in a 190 as it has a conventional handbrake. I did the rear wheel bearings and gave it a good service etc. I got MB alloys for it from an alleged former owner. he also sold me a new drivers seat cushion which it needed. the only thing that didn't work was the sunroof. The blower fan stopped working so i took it out and all it needed was a new bearing. I'd love a W123 diesel. However they are very popular in Ireland and not cheap as a result. We still have a rolling 30 year classic car tax.
