I have just had a further message from the late owners son, as to it's history.
Malcolm, I have found the Logbook and service record, and will post them on to you.
The early history of the car is now clearer from the documents.* It was first registered (presumably as a demonstrator) in February 1985; my father bought it three months later in May 1985.
So one owner plus demonstrator.

Work has delayed the rear brake refurb, but that shouldn't take too long to do once I get round to them.

I will put it in for a test as previously mentioned, but it will fail due to drivers rear sill end.

It should give a good indicator as to what is needed to be done for the next owner.

History confirmed. :D

This car was first registered on February 1st 1985 to ...........

On the Log Book:
Austin Rover Group LTD
Company Vehicles
Company Vehicle Control
PO Box 359
Longbridge.

In the service book:
Austin Rover Group Ltd
Canley Road.
Coventry.

Then Purchased by the First and only private owner from:

Charles Clark Stafford via Appleyard's of Wakefield.
(Likely a dealer exchange.)

The price for a 3 month old Montego 1.6L in 1985 was 5199.00 including Road Tax!.

Now for sale: As she stands 350.00 can take her away. Engine now running although needs a tune up, new fuel pump and pipes fitted, new vac line and elbows to ecu also fitted. Brakes free'd off, but will likely need new rear cylinders etc. I will include a pair of rear arch repair panels, even though she barely needs them.

This price is based on collection by the new owner.

Delivery possible but cost is by mutual agreement.
Included will be a set of 5 14' steel rims, so that the new owner can get a set of decent tyres fitted for use on the road.

All paperwork , old tax disc's and owners personal service log will be included as to be expected.

The original tyres although only having minor cracking and a mint unused spare are no good due to age. (and they were flat when I picked it up)

I will however continue to fettle and tinker with her until a new owner is found.

Buyer is an "Ex Pat" with a soft spot for Brit makes.

He recently purchased an Early MG Turbo version as well as a Rover 75 to ship back home in a container.

A friend and I have been helping him source parts for the cars to ensure longevity of service once over there.

Mal.

That is seriously impressive! Well done on finding it a home. I haven't seen one on the road in years so the more that can be saved the better.

I was just reminiscing (in my own mind :) ) today about the monti we used to own back in the............er........ day anyway.I can recall seeing a "black box" mounted on the wing and a small diameter vacuum pipe going somewhere too.It was probably any early version of electronic ignition.I dont know if she had a carb or fuel inj, probably carb. She was a 1.6 litre. But I also think there was an aluminium thingy (not a technical term ;) ) on the engine too.Surely that was not an early throttle body?

I also remember after we bought her, she seemed to not run fast enough when cold and so stalled. We discovered some class of a valve that needed to push on the throttle linkage to give the fast idle.It was not adjusted to meet the linkage at all, so when that was done it greatly improved things.Anyway she was a nice motor despite all the grief we got with her.
