Hi all,,, :D

The new 1954 MGTF1500 project is coming on well.

Image Image Image Image Image Image

The body came off the chassis, and chassis was stripped of running gear, and all cleaned to bare metal and the chassis and axle are painted.
Body and chassis are super solid and straight no welding needed, just a clean and repaint.
Mechanicals came apart easily as did almost all the nut and bolts on the whole car!!
Clean repaint, rebush, renew the susp and brakes then reassemble onto the chassis.
Then I can clean, paint and fit the MG Midget 1500TC recon eng and box ive bought.
The main bodytub needs 3 sections of the ash frame replaced,a rub down and repaint, along with bonnet, wings etc.
New loom,new chrome,full retrim.
This will keep me busy for a while!!
I am aiming to have it done ready for either a new years day,2013 show or the start of 2013 show season!!!!
Well I couldnt wait to get the rest of the parts cleaned,so ive painted the chassis! :)
Hung it up on 2 good straps so it could be spun round in the garage, and gave it 6 large cans of stoneguard overpaintable.
The finish is excellent satin black, not sure if I will overspray with gloss or not yet?
It will need a good week to go off before I decide!!,
Anyway I want to get a sand blaster and have a play on the smaller parts!!

Also bought and fitted a 3mx6m heavy duty gazebo side panel to my carport to increase my dry wind free working area!!
A bargain at £25 + £5 for the hardware to fit it up!!

Hi all.

NEW WORKSHOP TOY!

I've been looking for a while to buy one of these, but either too far away or too expensive s/h! :(
Finally, :D I spotted this locally, moved fast, and got to do a deal, with a guy who works at a well know west country safari park!!
He bought it about 3 yrs ago "£399ish+ grit" and has only done the tinware on a VW engine!! :)
Then put in the corner of the workshop and not used since, incl 50k of grit!!
Popped in today at lunchtime for a looksee and haggle a deal!
Great deal price was £130! BARGAIN!! :D
Then had lunch overlooking the lions, buffalo, giraffe etc!
Put it in the works van and dropped off at home after work!!
Also managed a deal elsewhere on 48 cans Simoniz 500ml spray paint!! :)
Got black gloss and black satin,5 wheel silver and red oxide,12 of each for a grand total of £105,and collected by a workmate!!
Parts arrived for the MG as well,2 new rear leaf springs and main body wood frame,3 sections",£££ouch!! but got 5% off as I will be spending lots more with them!!
So I am all ready for a busy hol next week!!

OH YES!! Almost forgot, the new toy!!
Had a jiggle about to make it fit!
YER TIZ!! click on pics!

I'd be interested to know how you get on with the blast cabinet, I was thinking of buying one of those, but haven't yet for the same reasons you mention!

Cheers,
Paul.

Ive been told that blast cabinets can kick out a lot of dust,so am going to try to seal up any gaps to keep dust leakage to a minimum, otherwise I will be wearing full bio-hazzard kit!
Image
But I do have an old drag about hoover that I can connect up with gaffer tape to the dust outlet port!

So far so good, got it set up,and did a test bit!! :)
Fitted up my old hoover to the outlet, used a plumbing grommet that fitted tight in the outlet and the hoover nozzle fits tight into that, and no gaffer tape,,,and I can turn on/off via my foot! :)
Got extra protection just incase, but had to take the track suit off as it was a bit warm!

Neighbour spotted me getting stuck in!! :)

Heres a pic of before "R",hand cleaned "M" and sand blasted "L" to compare!!.
Image

Its coming along bit by bit!
It is very hungry for air,so have to let the compressor cool down after a 15min session!!
Threads were well protected before cleaning!
Image Image Image
Drums, springs and pans + a few little brackets left to do!!
Hopefully by the end of this week I will have the chassis back to a rolling condition with all susp/axle/brake components blasted and painted.

Paul.

It is great to use, takes a lot of the hard graft out of cleaning!!
Just have to make sure that parts are cleaned of thick crud and greasy stuff before blasting!!
So I left them in the degreaser tank for as long as poss, scraped and brushed the worst off then rinse in parrafin or old fuel, and left to dry overnight before blasting.
You can buy a new one,"almost the same" and ample blast media for less than £300 if you hunt about,or wait and hope for a s/h one to turn up close to you!!
Good luck!

Dave

The only snag with a sandblaster is that they use a heck of a lot of sand - even the re-useable stuff only lasts a short time until it is dust! While Machine Mart is handy and the containers are a handy size, they are rather expensive.

My somewhat larger (and cheaper) blaster is on this thread:

http://www.practicallyclassics.co.uk/vi ... f=4&t=1807

Although the pot was an expensive item (about £150), it reduced the demands on the compressor significantly over the suction affair on the Clarke (etc) ones.

I was surprised how effective my dust extraction system is - there's hardly anything in the vacuum after a fairly hard session!

Of course, the most important thing is to get some protection on the item after blasting - they soon go rusty!

I'm enjoying the thread though - I suspect one of these (or a TC) would be in my "dream garage" (along with a P3 Rover, TR6, Humber Hawk etc).

You do need a good compressor!!!
Mine is a 3hp,14cfm,147psi max, twin cyl belt drive 150ltr tank and almost keeps up!!
As its only for light hobby use though it does the job great!

Almost all the bits now done, just a few left to do!
