Re: Mercedes-Benz M112 engine - preventative maintenance
Yes, interesting you mention the build quality on the R129; wonder how late versions like ours compare to a very early 90s copy qualitywise. There are definitely moments in that interior where in hindsight you can see the cost-cutting emerging - though nothing can come near to the cheapness of that ...

Re: The Model Car Forum
Yes that's right Terry; a mixture of weak moderators and a handful of keyboard thugs makes some of these forums no-go areas for the sane. There is maybe an inevitability about it: expression of opinions relating to matters that mean a great deal to people, like cars, should be carried out face-to-fa...

The Model Car Forum
Hello all: Excuse the facetiousness - but I couldn't resist. This has to be the perfect forum for Mercedes-Benz owners. By all accounts there is a sum total of two subscribers on here who have the slightest bit of interest in the marque. This leads to a mature, thoughtful exchange of views, experien...

Re: Mercedes-Benz M112 engine - preventative maintenance
So that's the source of it Terry!
Given how so many of these kind of parts are sourced from one supplier nowadays it's probably the same on the Benzes. Ta.

Re: Mercedes-Benz M112 engine - preventative maintenance
You're 100% dead-on there re 722.6; that box is, in the vernacular, 'tough as old boots'. Had a 2003 S203 C270 that used it; I keep in touch with the current owner and it's still purring along on 170k now. Remember being a complete ignoramus when first driving that S203 and not understanding why the...

Re: Mercedes-Benz M112 engine - preventative maintenance
Thanks very much for that; well noted re balancer, plugs and filter. And congratulation on the R230 purchase. You're dead on re sludge issue; on one of the US forums one bloke broke down either the 112 or 113 for repair and couldn't believe the amount of blow-by carbon that had collected on the ring...

Re: Vehicle build quality shift
All very true chaps. Tractorman - yes indeed, the pitifully cheap plasticky nature of these contemporary interiors is truly depressing. Seriously weighing up getting shot of the R230 for an old W124 Coupe for that very same reason. Kstrut - you're right, a very good point indeed. Us older types have...

Vehicle build quality shift
Hello all: Just came cross this pretty seminal post on grassrootsmotorsports.com: ‘In many ways CAD/CAM was the death blow to quality. While things could be fitted tighter than ever before and it allowed the engineers to know exactly how much material each part needed.. it also allowed the accountan...

Re: Car insurance for Hillman Minx
Definitely worth giving Martin at Chris Knott Insurance a call. For an extra 50 quid they recently provided an unlimited mileage policy on the R129 when Peter Best were limiting it to 5000 miles/year. The bloke is really clued in and they have a very good reputation among the specialist Benz clubs. ...

Can I get the old 'runs better than the original' in before anyone else?
