Very few cars are rated to tow something even as heavy as themselves, so trusting the mounts to take the extra strain of dead weight & whatever is holding you back such as mud... I think you're looking at a recipe for turning your Neon into a 2-wheeler!

I know what you mean about the double standards... On the one hand we're meant to drive progressively, forward-thinking to avoid heavy acceleration/deceleration to maintain good fuel economy & reduce harmful emissions; on the other, if you do that everywhere there's bumps you're going to get a ticke...

I find that I carry more spares in the cars with suitable locations to store them in; my Allegro saloon has the bare minimum as they just rattle around in the boot otherwise, whereas the estates have a lovely "hidden cavern" under the boot floor next to the spare. Write to the DVLA, asking to take ownership of an apparently abandoned car? They will then try to contact the owner, which if nothing else may spur them to come out & check on it, and see your note.
